Über diesen Titel

"Actor Soler's lively narration swiftly draws listeners into the magical spectacle at the center of Garber's YA novel" — Publishers Weekly, best audiobooks of 2017

Welcome, welcome to
Caraval — Stephanie Garber’s sweeping tale of two sisters who escape their ruthless father when they enter the dangerous intrigue of a legendary game.

Scarlett has never left the tiny island where she and her beloved sister, Tella, live with their powerful, and cruel, father. Now Scarlett’s father has arranged a marriage for her, and Scarlett thinks her dreams of seeing Caraval, the far-away, once-a-year performance where the audience participates in the show, are over.

But this year, Scarlett’s long-dreamt of invitation finally arrives. With the help of a mysterious sailor, Tella whisks Scarlett away to the show. Only, as soon as they arrive, Tella is kidnapped by Caraval’s mastermind organizer, Legend. It turns out that this season’s Caraval revolves around Tella, and whoever finds her first is the winner.

Scarlett has been told that everything that happens during Caraval is only an elaborate performance. But she nevertheless becomes enmeshed in a game of love, heartbreak, and magic with the other players in the game. And whether Caraval is real or not, she must find Tella before the five nights of the game are over, a dangerous domino effect of consequences is set off, and her sister disappears forever.

I am not a Teenie, but this book through me back to my teenage years. It's not about teenaged, though I guess the age of the characters does qualify them as such. It's about magic, and dreams and being brave and running head-first into a family secret that was not meant for them to unravel. But it's funny, charming and brought a wide smile to my face.

I feel like a Teenager again!

I have mixed feelings about Caraval. I liked the concept overall, and I did enjoy parts of the world-building, the atmosphere, and the magic. There's a strong, imaginative foundation to the story that I really appreciated.
That said, I already had a similar issue with Evangeline in Once Upon a Broken Heart: the extreme naivety. But there, it worked better for me because the story fully leans into a whimsical fairytale tone. The dramatic reactions and questionable decisions feel intentional in that kind of setting. In Caraval, though, it didn't feel as fitting, it just felt frustrating.
The FMC and her sister come across as unbelievably naive. They constantly misunderstand situations, trust the wrong people, and make decisions that don't make sense at all. What bothered me most is that they repeatedly claim they would do anything for each other, yet they trust complete strangers over one another without hesitation. They doubt each other so quickly but blindly believe people they just met. It made their bond feel inconsistent and hard to invest in.
I also struggled with the game itself. It often feels like it only truly makes sense for the main character, while everyone else's motivations are vague or simply strange.
On top of that, the constant "everything is a lie, no one is who they seem, everyone is deceiving you" becomes exhausting. Instead of feeling clever or mysterious, it started to feel draining, almost like a horror story where you can't trust anything at all.
The ending did clear up some things and tied parts of the story together, but it didn't undo the frustration | felt throughout most of the book.

so much potential, so much frustration

Spannende Geschichte mit vielen Plot-Twists und vielen kreativen Ideen. Einen Stern Abzug gibt's für die fehlende Charakterentwicklung der FMC

Tolles Romantasy Hörbuch

I loved the world of Caraval and every detail Garber put in it. The book gave of Alice in Wonderland vibes. I also liked that the topic abuse was touched, although I would not have associated real life problems with a fantasy genre but rather with new adult. So that was interesting. I loved the riddles and the deceit in the game. However, I feel like the father character was somewhat superficial. I did not really get the feeling of how it is to be beaten by your father and how their childhood felt because of that. Moreover, in the end there were long parts of simply explaining over dialogue. I think that could have been done better.

The speaker did an amazing job with all the characters and all the emotions they felt. She is the perfect pick for this novel. 😊 It kind of felt like a children's book, but darker and very magical. 👍

Over all I would totally recommend the book. It is beautifully written and thrilling, but it is not like a drug. More like a nice read.

Escape Reality with Caraval
