Über diesen Titel

The Suez Crisis of 1956 was Britain's 20th-century nadir, the moment when the once superpower was bullied into retreat. In the immortal words of former US Secretary of State Dean Acheson, 'Britain has lost an empire and not yet found a role.' But the funny thing was, Britain had already found a role. It even had the costume. The leaders of the world just hadn't noticed it yet.

Butler to the World reveals how the UK took up its position at the elbow of the worst people on Earth: the oligarchs, kleptocrats and gangsters. We pride ourselves on values of fair play and the rule of law, but few countries do more to frustrate global anticorruption efforts. We are now a nation of Jeeveses, snobbish enablers for rich halfwits of considerably less charm than Bertie Wooster. It doesn't have to be that way.

An insightful account how Global Britain enables kleptocrats worldwide to hide their ill begotten wealth from being seized. I came across the author in a podcast on Russian money.

This audiobook provides an account of how the West is looking the other way or is actively promoting public theft, money laundering and tax evasion. After this audiobook, I cannot see how sanctions against Russian oligarchs can be effectively enforced given that it's hidden in shell companies and tax havens in many jurisdictions around the globe. The price is paid by ordinary Russians, Ukrainians and poor people elsewhere. Thus, there is a limited incentive for Western politicians to act except for seizing a yacht here and freezing a known account there.

Enabling money laundering British style

It was a great idea for a book. For me the book it's too superficial with focusing sometimes on too much irrelevant details like the Suez crisis. It does not discuss the wealth management banks nor the schemes of wealthy individuals. Gambling industry in Gibraltar, which mostly exploits poor Brits, has less relevance than rich arabs or Russians who use the mail box companies in the UK.

Superficial
