From #1 New York Times bestselling award winning author Robert McCammon, a novel that Publishers Weekly calls “both a mystery that will satisfy the most finicky aficionado and a boisterous travelogue.”

Zephyr, Alabama, is an idyllic hometown for eleven-year-old Cory Mackenson—a place where monsters swim the river deep and friends are forever. Then, one cold spring morning, Cory and his father witness a car plunge into a lake—and a desperate rescue attempt brings his father face-to-face with a terrible vision of death that will haunt him forever.

As Cory struggles to understand his father’s pain, his eyes are slowly opened to the forces of good and evil that are manifested in Zephyr. From an ancient, mystical woman who can hear the dead and bewitch the living, to a violent clan of moonshiners, Cory must confront the secrets that hide in the shadows of his hometown—for his father’s sanity and his own life hang in the balance. "Boy's Life" is really just about Corey Mackensens life. This might seem obvious but having read "Swan Song" by the same author, I expected a bit more in the way of an actual plot. This book is a 20-plus-hour account of Corey growing up in Zephyr. Yes, he sees a ghost car, and a ghost kid, and a ghost dog. Yes, his father is troubled by the murder he witnesses but it never goes beyond that. "Boy's Life" is a quiet book that is mildly entertaining, and well read. It captures the magic of youth, and the idyll of small-town life. Yet I've listened to "Revival" by Stephen King just before "Boy's Life", whose plotline also starts out with a boy growing up in a small town, and it's so much better because it actually goes somewhere, plot-wise.

If you are looking for a lengthy, quiet, well-read audiobook where you can miss a couple of minutes here and there without detriment to your audio-experience, "Boy's Life" is for you. If you're looking for light-horror suspense, choose something else.

don't expect suspense ...
