Interesting premise and good world building somewhat dragged down by an inconsistent, all over the place MC. I like anti heroes but this one tries too hard at times just to flip the switch and be a complete wuss just a moment later, tripping over himself.

MC is falling in love with every woman he meets along the way and in turn the story derails from anti hero revenge power fantasy to "melodramatic emo wimp struggling to keep his emotions and pants in check" romance. There is just too much focus on the love interetsts. It started out good, lost momentum during the middle of the book but picked up the pace near the end.

That's why book 2 will get a chance. But MC better get his shit together or it will be dropped, sadly.

Also didn't like the over emphasis on the gory and brutal parts of the book by the narrator. It just sounded too try Hardy.

You should still give the book a try, maybe it just wasn't for me. It's still a good story in there somewhere when the author focuses more on MCs past and his mission.
