Long before the songs turned him into a monument, Beowulf was a young man with a boat, a name to earn, and a rumor of a monster in another king's hall.
This is the old story in a plain-spoken new voice. The mead-benches still smell of smoke. Grendel still comes in the dark. The mother still drags her grief up out of the mere. A dragon still wakes for a stolen cup, fifty winters later. But the poetry has been cleared away so you can hear the men underneath—tired, funny, afraid, and standing anyway.
A young hero. Fifty quiet winters on a throne. One last fire in the hills.
The oldest hero story in English, told the way a friend would tell it.
This updated retelling was scripted in part using Artificial Intelligence.
