Über diesen Titel

The first book in the multi-million copy bestselling series about a cosy Japanese cafe that offers its visitors the chance to travel back in time.

Toshikazu Kawaguchi’s heart-warming Before the Coffee Gets Cold, translated from Japanese, explores the age-old question: what would you do if you could travel back in time? More importantly, who would you want to meet, maybe for one last time?

In a cosy back alley in Tokyo, there is a cafe which has been serving carefully brewed coffee for more than one hundred years. But this coffee shop offers its customers a unique experience: the chance to travel back in time.

Prepare to meet four visitors, each of whom is hoping to make use of the cafe’s time-travelling offer in order to:
- confront the man who left them
- receive a letter from their husband whose memory has been taken by Alzheimer's
- see their sister one last time, and
- meet the daughter they never got the chance to know.

But the journey into the past does not come without risks: customers must sit in a particular seat, they cannot leave the cafe, and finally, they must return to the present before the coffee gets cold . . .

‘This book broke my heart, took the pieces, and put them back together in a messy and beautiful way. . . '

I love how to story was so different than other stories about travelling in time. A brilliant idea and well written . It ended too soon.

time travel refreshingly different

This is an enjoyable read and quite touching.
Yet I am not tempted to read the follow-ups. For that, the storylines would need to be less forseeable and on the whole less tear-drenched. But still, it is an original story with very relatable characters.

Modern fairy tale

Big plot twists at the end made it a beautiful listen. Also a very emotionally driven book

Moving

The narrator did a great job, the story was amazing. Caught myself crying a few times, but it really is worth reading :)

Heart-warming booklet

This book is so heartwarming but it will also break you in the best way. It feels so effortlessly poetic as it explores the human experience. would recommend this to anyone.

Such a delicate and thoughtful story

Ein Fehler ist aufgetreten. Bitte versuche es in ein paar Minuten noch einmal.

The book builds an interesting background story that somehow you hope that it climaxes to something greater but at the end it remains a well packed anthology of small stories of every day people in a cafe. In that sense it keeps you interested but not on your toes. I pretty much enjoyed it while riding a bike.

A light reading to pass the time

Story was okay but also a bit slow moving. Hard to really get enticed into

Blah

Ein Fehler ist aufgetreten. Bitte versuche es in ein paar Minuten noch einmal.

Written like a children’s book, but worse. Half of the story makes no sense at all.

Time travelling is framed as the solution for things that could have been resolved with a simple talk or phone call.

Rules in the world building feel like a second thought most of the time and are super inconsistent.

The characters feel very flat and token like - stereotypes at best.

The performance of the reader feels overly dramatic and constantly emphasising the wrong words/ sentences.

I really don’t understand why this book is so well liked.

Very frustrating and bad storytelling
