Threatened from within and without the city, Glokta needs answers, and he needs them soon.

And to the east, a small band of malefactors travel to the edge of the world to reclaim a device from history - a Seed, hidden for generations - with tremendous destructive potential. A device which could put a end to war, to the army of Eaters in the South, to the invasion of Shanka from the North - but only if it can be found, and only if its power can be controlled.

The Series is one of the best I have ever read, I like it even more than A Song of Ice and Fire and that is quite the Accomplishment. The Narrator gives every Character a unique voice, so the Dialogues can be easily followed.
For a middle Book in a Fantasy Trilogy this is as good as it gets, after all you have to be realistic.

The book continues the story that finally picked up in the end of the first book, and it keeps going at that high level. The world building is a bit vague, but that doesn't matter as much because where the meat is, is in the characters, everyone of them unique, and all of the protagonists deeply flawed people. The characters are also made alive by great narration so you are never in doubt which character is speaking.

I only take a point off for the lack of proper world building, since that is a favorite part of mine in fantasy.

say one thing for joe abercrombie, say he`s a writer.
Das sind coole Figuren und eine breit angelegte Geschichte. Da ist Witz drin und einiger Sarkasmus. Ja, die Story ist auch brutal. Für mich ist JA auf dem Weg in die erste Reihe der Fantasyautoren. Ihr solltet Inquisitor Glokta, Logan Ninefingers und die ganze Bande mehr oder weniger wahnsinniger Figuren kennen lernen und heraus finden, ob Ihr sie mögt. Ich freue mich jedenfalls auf die nächsten Bände!

Steven Pacey makes an already overwhelmingly written novel a breathtaking journey that made me laugh, shudder and shed a tear or two.

the first law series is a masterpiece of dark storytelling.
no noble heroes, no invincible masters, no good nor evil, just petty flaws, incompetence, bad decisions and lots of blood.
abercrombie creates a lot of utterly unique characters, some of which - even with all their flaws - often manage to be likable.
the narrator is brilliant in his inflections and diversity of accents and voices.

Abercrombie is a great story teller, but the story itself did not go anywhere in this book. This is not unusual for a trilogy, where the middle book leaves all the questions unanswered.

3 different story lines compete for the attention of the reader:

Superior Glokta, the crippled shadow hero of the story defends Dagoska, an isolated town in the south of the Union, against Gurkish invaders. Political power play, intrigue and human weakness add some spice to this part of the story.

The magus Bayaz leads a small band consisting of the violent and brutal Logan, the arrogant and stuck-up Union officer Jezal dan Luthar, the vicious and mysterious Ferro Maljinn and a navigator on an eventful journey to the end of the world. The trip is full of adventures and surprises and as unbelievable as it sounds, a little bit of bizarre romance between Logan and Ferro.

Colonel West defends Angland in the north of the Union against the invasion of Bethod, king of the North. A little group of rough Northmen, friends of Logan and all of them 'named men' become his allies.

Abercrombie packed a lot of action into this book, incredible fighting scenes, cruel and bloody details of torture, complex intrigues and political backstabbing, but somehow I felt like watching an action movie where the special effects outweigh the story. Regardless of that, it is an entertaining and gripping novel.
