Alice, Felix, Eileen and Simon are still young - but life is catching up with them. They desire each other, they delude each other, they worry about sex and friendship and the times they live in. Will they find a way to believe in a beautiful world?

I remember when I first read the book, I found it really nerve-wracking, those characters that love each other but struggle to get along. At times it made me angry. Now, maybe two years later, listening to the audiobook, I have come to fully appreciate the novel. I really learned something about people who are a lot different from me and my close friends, but maybe similar to other people that I have always struggled to understand.
Also, it is excellently read.

Maybe her best book yet

The narration is a bit weird. All the men get a voice that sounds like they're just stupid.
The story gets more interesting towards the end, but it's kind of just trickling along most of the time. The writing is good though, so it's still touching from time to time. The ending is undeniably horrible... Not gonna listen to her other novels

Touching but a bit boring

What stood out to me the most was the intellectual depth of the two heroines—something I haven’t seen much in fiction. I loved the way the author portrays their friendship, as the central aspect of the plot which at first seemed to be a mere tool for telling two separate stories, but at the end provided very strong and relatable catharsis. What I did not particularly enjoy was the feeling that some sex scenes were out of place in the flow of the novel.

I did not like the performance of the narrator, the female characters sounded too preppy for my liking which, I felt, didn’t really suit their natures.

What a beautiful, gripping story covering so many themes and questions in life. Loved it.

Sally Rooney never disappoints

So the reader of this, Aoife McMahon, was perfectly fine, nice clear voice, wonderful accent. The problem were the male voices, which I assume are done by her using a different voice? Why is this a thing now? They make all male characters sound stupid, and they take you out of the story all the time. Makes it unbearable. This is not a play, but an audiobook, I’d rather the reader used her own, great, voice for all dialogues

Not the best Sally Rooney but also, the reading

Four privileged, unlikeable friends natter on about their perspectives on god and the world. Especially cringeworthy are the sex scenes “you have such a lovely tight c***t”
And the solution to all your problems - get pregnant and get married. Sorry, I am too old and too much of a feminist to appreciate that kind of thinking.
At least it was read in a convincing Irish accent.

The irritable thoughts of irritable people

After having suffered hours through this audio-book where EVERYONE seems to constantly suffer, I‘d give one star in all categories. But the parts where the story covers more philosophical questions of life were not as bad as the rest and I first liked the speaker’s voice… until it got unbearably tragic-sounding. In the end, the message seems to be: however desperate you are with your job or the pandemic, try to get pregnant. Ouch!

A lot of suffering

I enjoyed Sally Rooneys other work, but I really struggled to get through this. The e-mail exchange just felt like boring filler

Not for me
