Her beginning may be our end....

Deep in the humid Mississippi bayou, a half-wild child is dragged from the murky waters. She has no memories and no family and is covered in mysterious markings. Adopted by the policeman who rescued her, Luce Boudreau follows him onto the force, determined to prove herself in the eyes of those who are still suspicious.

However, there's more of a battle ahead than Luce could possibly imagine. She may be an orphan without a past, but no one - including Luce herself - could ever be prepared for the truth of her dark, powerful destiny....

Kritikerstimmen

"The world building is fresh...The characters are well-drawn and easy to root for. And the romance really hits the spot." (Red Hot Books)

Sadly gotta say that I started to hate it about midway through. :( I decided to quit listening in chapter 19. It focusses less on the fantasy setting and more on the romance.
No spoiler review of why I did not like it: The speaker reads everything in a very thick southern accent, which sounds so over-the-top, it's annoyingly melodramatic. While the worldbuilding is superb and interesting (gotta admit that), the characters are shallow and typical. Luce, the heroine, couldn't be more annoying to me - trying to be a 'strong woman' but acting like an idiot 3/4 of the time. Unneccessary love story crammed into the story, with no sparks or feelings. The plot is fragmentary every here and there, lots of everyday-life-slices in between. Lots of potential imo, but sadly did not do it for me. Shallow romantasy with a clueless but trying-to-be-strong heroine, if you want a cute lovestory and little actual plot, this one might be for you.
