O tym tytule
The Extraordinary Adventures of Arsène Lupin, Gentleman-Burglar (1907) is Maurice Leblanc's first collection of stories about the gentleman-burglar Arsène Lupin — a thief of genius who operates by wit, charm and audacity rather than violence, and whose exploits confound the police of Paris. The nine episodes trace his arc from mysterious fugitive to public legend: "The Arrest of Arsène Lupin" opens aboard a transatlantic liner, where the narrator — in fact Lupin himself — courts Miss Nelly Underdown while the police hunt the man who robbed the bank to pay his debts; "Arsène Lupin in Prison" finds the master-thief behind bars yet still directing a brazen theft from Baron Cahorn's castle; "The Escape of Arsène Lupin" is the famous prison break staged on the day of his trial before the eyes of judge and gaoler; "The Mysterious Traveller" sees Lupin, disguised as Inspector Ganimard, turn a train journey into a game of wits with a murderer and his own pursuers; "The Queen's Necklace" reconstructs the legendary diamond necklace of Marie-Antoinette and the Countess de Dreux-Soubise's strange theft; "The Seven of Hearts" is told by Lupin's own historiographer and involves the murder of a banker's messenger, the brothers Varin, the submarine "Seven-of-Hearts," and Lupin's ally Daspry/Salvator; "Madame Imbert's Safe" recounts Lupin's most courteous conquest — a widow's fortune defended by bolts and bars, and the "professional" burglary that left him with nothing; "The Black Pearl" is a locked-room murder at the Countess d'Andillot's home and the true villain who stole the precious pearl; and "Sherlock Holmes Arrives Too Late" matches Lupin against the great English detective over a stolen name, a broken marriage and the Baron d'Imblevalle's treasures. A classic of the French detective story, witty, ironic, and endlessly inventive.
