Milo Huron has had enough. Enough of his dad, who walked out on them two years ago and seems to have disappeared off the face of the earth. Enough of his mom, who is working so much she’s almost never home. And, most of all, he has had enough of Aunt Irma, who is no fun at all and has basically locked Milo and his baby sister, Ella, inside all summer.
Aunt Irma is keeping secrets, and Milo is going to figure them out. Armed with pine sap, a butter-eating dog, and some good luck, Milo ventures into the mysterious swamp behind her house, where he has seen lights dancing at night. But then—a slip, a misstep, a give beneath his feet—he falls through the earth into a strange and dangerous world, where memories can be bought and sold for magic. Even worse, Ella has fallen in too, and she’s been captured by a terrible creature—the memory-hoarding Magpie.
With his memories, a mysterious sword, and some possibly treacherous companions at his side, Milo must undertake a series of trials to save Ella—or risk them both becoming monsters forever.
