Today's fixed income and FX markets sent a clear warning signal: the era of cheap money is not just over — it's reversing fast. Three converging stories are reshaping risk frameworks for institutional portfolios right now.

Sterling rallied against both the dollar and the euro after UK inflation printed above expectations, cementing market bets on a Bank of England rate hike in November. The move underscores how inflation surprises continue to dictate currency flows.

Meanwhile, rising euro-zone borrowing costs reignited the "doom loop" debate — the dangerous feedback between sovereign debt stress and domestic bank balance sheets. Higher yields compress the market value of government-bond holdings, a dynamic that destabilised the region during the debt crisis 15 years ago. French bond yields hit multiyear highs, amplifying these concerns.

Across the Atlantic, the US Treasury auctioned $13 billion of 20-year bonds at a 5.469% yield — the highest clearing rate since January 1986 — while the 10-year touched 5.145%. Money markets now price an 85% probability of unchanged Fed rates on October 28.
