On a slope of Mount Maenalus in Arcadia, beside the ruins of an ancient villa, stands a single olive tree of monstrous and disquieting shape. Its branches form something uncomfortably like a human figure, and the peasants will not go near it after dark.
Long ago, two sculptors lived in that villa, friends since boyhood and the finest artists in Greece. When the tyrant of Syracuse commissioned a statue of Tyche and promised the honour to whichever of them carved the greater work, their friendship was put to a test that only one of them survived. The olive tree grew from the grave of the other.
Written in 1920, The Tree is one of H.P. Lovecraft's classical tales, a quiet and elegant story of rivalry, guilt and an ancient Greek vengeance that outlasts the men who earned it.
Listen to the complete, unabridged audiobook of this early story by the master of weird fiction.
