The richest companies on Earth are buying something the world swore it had outgrown: nuclear power.

Microsoft is bringing back a reactor at Three Mile Island, the most infamous name in atomic history. Amazon, Google and Meta are signing contracts for reactors that do not even exist yet. The reason is artificial intelligence. Its data centres devour electricity day and night, and sun and wind cannot keep them fed. Forty years after the world turned its back on the atom, Big Tech is betting billions that the world was wrong.

That bet hides a scandal. The West has forgotten how to build. One American plant ran seven years late and more than doubled in cost. A French one took seventeen years. Meanwhile China finishes reactors in five years and has almost thirty rising at once. Much of the fuel for the next generation still comes from Russia. And fusion, sold for decades as limitless clean energy, still cannot power the building it sits in.

The most shocking part is the one nobody advertises. Measured in lives lost for the electricity produced, nuclear power is one of the safest energy sources humans have ever used, and coal is hundreds of times deadlier. Fukushima's radiation killed one person. The rushed evacuation killed far more.

• why the AI boom is reviving reactors once left for dead
• why Chernobyl happened, and why no power reactor can explode like a bomb
• why small factory-built reactors are still mostly promises
• what the fusion "breakthrough" headlines leave out
• how a coup in Africa and a war in Ukraine turned uranium into a weapon
• who is really winning the new atomic race

The atom was never the problem. People were.
