A wife's fight against leukemia. A war that closed the skies. A faith that held.
In the spring of 1990, Shahid Malik and his wife, Kaukab, were living a full life in Saudi Arabia's Eastern Province. They were raising two young daughters in the close-knit expatriate community of Saudi Aramco. Then Kaukab was diagnosed with leukemia, and soon after, the Gulf War began.
While Kaukab fought for her life through chemotherapy, relapse, and an urgent bone marrow transplant, missiles fell over the region. Evacuation flights were grounded and families were torn apart on airport tarmacs. Through it all, Kaukab held fast to something the missiles and the medicine could not touch: her faith in Qadar, the destiny she believed her Creator had already written for her.
Faith in Destiny is Shahid Malik's account of the year that changed everything. It is one man's tribute to his wife's courage, and a meditation on what it means to hold onto hope, patience, and love when the outcome is entirely out of your hands.
If you have faced a diagnosis, a loss, or a moment when everything felt like it was being decided beyond your control, Kaukab's story offers something rare: not easy answers, but a steady hand to hold.
