In this conversation, Chris Hemmings speaks with Mike Nicholson, founder and director of Progressive Masculinity, an organisation delivering workshops in schools across the UK focused on boys, masculinity and emotional wellbeing.

Before founding Progressive Masculinity, Mike spent 20 years working as a teacher. During that time, he became increasingly aware of how many boys were struggling silently with pressure, shame, hopelessness and rigid expectations around masculinity. Together, Chris and Mike explore boys’ mental health, masculinity, emotional literacy, rites of passage and the growing sense of hopelessness many young men feel about the future.

They discuss why boys often struggle to talk openly, the impact of social media and online influencers, why male role models matter and how schools can better support boys without shaming or attacking them.

They also explore working-class identity, fatherlessness, pornography, suicide ideation, youth culture, accountability, vulnerability and why boys need spaces where they feel psychologically safe enough to be honest.

This episode is a conversation about masculinity, education and the importance of giving boys the language, community and role models they need to become healthy men.
