When a well-known British TV historian, Marmaduke Godolphin, is found murdered in the canals of Venice during carnival, stabbed by a stiletto blade, the Venetian police are eager to have the case solved and cleared up within a day - murder is bad for tourism!

The police recruit the help of retired archivist, Arnold Clover. Godolphin had hired his services on arriving in Venice to help sort through some historical papers of note. These dusty documents may contain previously unknown information about the assassination of the murderer, Lorenzino de' Medici, 500 years previously.

How coincidental that Godolphin meets his death in the same place as the Medici murderer, Lorenzino, on a cold, dark, bloody night. Brilliantly written and wonderfully narrated with an ending I did not expect. Highly recommended.

Historical whodunit

Wer Spannung hier erwartet, wird wahrscheinlich enttäuscht sein, weil die Handlung auf zwei Zeitebenen doch sehr ausufert, dazu kommen noch zahlreiche "Ausflüge" in die Geschichte Venedigs. Da ich aber Richard Armitage zuhören würde, wenn er das Telefonbuch vorliest, bin ich dabei geblieben und war am Ende froh darüber, denn da nimmt die Handlung richtig Fahrt auf.
Ein unbedingtes Muss für Venedig-Kenner und -Liebhaber!

Ich liebe alle Geschichten ´erzählt von Richard Armitage. Er ist einfach perfekt für alle Dialekte- egal ob es sich um Männer- oder Frauenstimmen handelt . Die Geschichte verbindet Vergangenheit und Gegenwart.

Die Handlung ist ein bisschen verwirrend, die Stadt aber im Karneval atmosphärisch schön beschrieben. Die Ermordung von Marmaduk Godolphin ist der rote Faden durch die Handlung, die 500 Jahre zurück geht. Richard Armitage gibt dem vermeintlich unscheinbaren Engländer Arnold Clover seine unverstellte eigene Stimme und spricht Capitano Valentina Fabbri mit Akzent, dem Amerikaner Hauptmann verpasst er einen umwerfenden und stimmigen Slang. Very well done!
