This lavish visual history—featuring over 180 all-new illustrations—is a stunning introduction to House Targaryen, the iconic family at the heart of HBO’s Game of Thrones prequel series, House of the Dragon.

For hundreds of years, the Targaryens sat the Iron Throne of Westeros while their dragons ruled the skies. The story of the only family of dragonlords to survive Valyria’s Doom is a tale of twisty politics, alliances and betrayals, and acts both noble and craven. The Rise of the Dragon chronicles the creation and rise of Targaryen power in Westeros, covering the history first told in George R. R. Martin’s epic Fire & Blood, from Aegon Targaryen’s conquest of Westeros through to the infamous Dance of the Dragons—the bloody civil war that nearly undid Targaryen rule for good.

Packed with all-new artwork, the Targaryens—and their dragons—come vividly to life in this deluxe reference book. Perfect for fans steeped in the lore of Westeros, as well as those who first meet the Targaryens in the HBO series House of the Dragon, The Rise of the Dragon provides a must-have overview for anyone looking to learn more about the most powerful family in Westeros.

Incredibly fascinating, which is not easy to do for a fictional history book. Enjoyed this part a lot and will definitely get the second part.

I like the story of game of thrones and am also curious about all the stories and tales of the earlier days in the realm with the Targaryens. this book presents exactly such stories and a lot of them. However, it's not very entertaining to listen to a storyline with no actual character interaction. This audiobook is more like a history book from school.
I guess only hardcore fans would be interested in this history lesson.

Interesting story but read as history book

Yes, this book (and all other 'Westerosi History' books by GRRM) is a fake non-fiction book. That means you will not get a lot of characters' pov or dialog, like you do in the Song of Ice and Fire main books. This is an overview of Targaryen history starting with The Conquest and ending about half way through the Targaryen reign, a few years after the end of the civil war known as The Dance of the Dragons.
And, yes, this is basically a heavily abridged version of 'Fire and Blood', which runs 27 hours and 15 minutes, compared to this book's 8 hours and 10 minutes.
So, in a way this might be seen as a rip-off... but it has one strength: Harry Lloyd (known as Viserys Targaryen in the show Game of Thrones and the audio book 'A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms'). Now, I'm not saying Simon Vance did a bad job with Fire and Blood. He sounds like an elderly Maester giving you a history lesson by the fire. But Lloyd does such a great job and has such a pleasant voice that I greatly enjoyed revisiting this version, even if it is stiffly abridged compared to the original.
