Over 1 million Discworld audiobooks sold – discover the extraordinary universe of Terry Pratchett’s Discworld like never before

The audiobook of The Colour of Magic is read by Colin Morgan (Merlin; Testament of Youth; Belfast). BAFTA and Golden Globe award-winning actor Bill Nighy (Love Actually; Pirates of the Caribbean; Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows) reads the footnotes, and Peter Serafinowicz (Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace; Shaun of the Dead) stars as the voice of Death. Featuring a new theme tune composed by James Hannigan.

'It was octarine, the colour of magic. It was alive and glowing and vibrant and it was the undisputed pigment of the imagination . . .'

Somewhere between thought and reality exists the Discworld, a magical world not totally unlike our own. Except for the fact that it travels through space on the shoulders of four giant elephants who in turn stand on the shell of an astronomically huge star turtle, of course.

Rincewind is the world's worst wizard who has just been handed a very important job: to look after the world's first tourist, upon whose survival rests the peace and prosperity of the land. Unfortunately, their journey across the Disc includes facing robbers, monsters, mercenaries, and Death himself.

And the whole thing's just a game of the gods that might send them over the edge . . .

You can listen to the Discworld novels in any order, but The Colour of Magic is the first book in the Wizards series.

The Colour of Magic is the first book in the Discworld series and was published in 1983. Some elements of the Discworld universe may reflect this.

One of the best and funniest English authors alive
Like Jonathan Swift, Pratchett uses his other world to hold up a distorting mirror to our own, and like Swift he is a satirist of enormous talent...incredibly funny...compulsively readable.
He would be amusing in any form and his spectacular inventiveness makes the Discworld series one of the perennial joys of modern fiction.

Just amazing! Colin Morgan was the best choice for this. I'm looking forward to the rest of the series!

Perfect!

While technically and chronologically the first Discworld novel and the first entry in what will become the "Wizards" cycle of stories, this book is closer to a straight up fantasy parody than later stories. Still insightful and witty, yet not quite the mirror held up to life that long time fans have come to expect from Sir Terry's Discworld. As such, I wouldn not recommend this one as an entry point to the Discworld - much better to start somewhere else and come back to this book when the love for the series and its characters is already deeply rooted.

As for the audiobook specifically, Colin Morgan is simply perfect for the role, and I wonder if this has to do exclusively with his stint as young Merlin in the eponymous TV show, or if he is simply born for this type of story. I wholeheartedly recommend giving this a listen!

Best enjoyed if you're already a fan.

I’ve read raising steam already, so I know Terry Pratchett has more gripping stories. This book introduces a lot of very interesting concepts and is fun to listen to, but the characters are less engaging somehow. The stories in this book are nice, but not that complex as it seems more focused on showing concepts in discworld. The narration was great though with a large variety of voices that really made the characters come to life :).

Very intriguing introduction to discworld with a story the could be more compelling

and sometimes funny enough to laugh out loud. I liked it a lot. In my opinion, the narrator did a fantastic job, as well.

Quirky and very enjoyable

After hearing it's not a good point to start, I'm surprised how much I liked it! I don't think it's a must-read for everybody but if you like the genre, you probably also like this book. I certainly found it quite funny and imaginative.
