    Many Victorians, especially the more successful ones, feared shame. In a way this fear was something quite new. A new and growing newspaper industry was keen to amplify that shame. And a new middle class, desperate to cling to its new-found monied status, felt threatened. And, new theories about heredity, coming later in the century, meant that (perish the thought!) shamefulness could be passed on – like red hair or big feet - from generation to generation.

Delightfully Amazing!

The by far best researched, most entertaining Podcast I have ever found. Stephen Fry narrates this Podcast in an absolutely delightfully humorous and informative manner. And it is not just entertaining for "history freaks" like me but truly something for everyone. My favourite Podcast I have found so far and I really hope there will be more of it in the future!!

The stories of this series are not only interesting, but highlight aspects from that age from different angles. The narrator is superb and the various soundeffects complete the scenery. This makes every dull car ride baerable.

Stephen Fry as a narrator...

... is doing a wonderful job. I could really dive into the different topics this Podcast introduces and see the lives of some of the women fly by in front of my eyes-a very lively performance not just by Mr. Fry but also the other participants reading i.e. diary entries.
The range of themes covers a broad spectrum and is performed in a way that my interest to learn more about some of them was peaked. To achieve this, to peak the curiosity of readers or listeners to know more, is a skill and an art very well performed by this team of narrators and producers :-)

very entertaining and actually useful knowledge

Stephen Fry has the most enjoyable voice. Unexpectedly the subject of chapter 2 is also partly featured in my current homepaper for university. I was able to revise some information simply by listening - brilliant!
