Julian Barnes' new book is, among many things, a family memoir, an exchange with his brother (a philosopher), a meditation on morality and the fear of death, a celebration of art, an argument with and about God, and homage to the French writer Jules Renard.

Though he warns us that 'this is not my autobiography', the result is a tour of the mind of one of our most brilliant writers.

Brilliant!

Ever widening circles, expanding to enlarge the scope of what was brought up earlier. A la recherche du temps perdu in the midst of variations in memories, perspectives.
At 92, my English mother read the book, Rien à craindre, in Berlin. She had nothing to fear.
As Barnes in this book, 1. she spun her tales, 2. I spun mine, yet mostly 3. we shared ours, piecing the past and present together
