The follow-up to the hugely popular science fiction action-adventure All Systems Red

Artificial Condition continues The Murderbot Diaries, a science fiction series that tackles questions of the ethics of sentient robotics. It appeals to fans of Westworld, Ex Machina, Ann Leckie's Imperial Raadch series, or Iain M. Banks' Culture novels. The main character is a deadly security droid that has bucked its restrictive programming and is balanced between contemplative self-discovery and an idle instinct to kill all humans. "As a heartless killing machine, I was a complete failure."

It has a dark past - one in which a number of humans were killed. A past that caused it to christen itself "Murderbot." But it has only vague memories of the massacre that spawned that title, and it wants to know more.

Teaming up with a Research Transport vessel named ART (you don't want to know what the "A" stands for), Murderbot heads to the mining facility where it went rogue.

What it discovers will forever change the way it thinks.

The second book of this excellent series about AIs and constructed beings, this one adds ART as murderbot's partner. ART is an AI running a ship, which brings up reminiscence of HAL, of 2001 fame. But where HAL was made all too human, Martha Wells manages to keep ART firmly artificial, making an even more interesting character. And Kevin Free does, once again, a perfect job of bringing these two brilliant artificial characters to life.

Martha Wells gives a unique chance do dive into the mind of a good hearted, creative and sanctuary-moon-loving murderbot.
In this second novella I especially loved his new connection with the AI Art, who grows to be a helpful and curious friend with love for sarcasm protecting humans.

To kill all the humans, I answered.

I could feel ART metaphorically clutch its function. If there were no humans, there would be no crew to protect and no reason to do research and fill its databases. It said, That is irrational.

I know, I said, if the humans were dead, who would make the media? It was so outrageous, it sounded like something a human would say.

I think I liked this novella even more than the first one. It was just as quiet as „All Systems Red“, which is not to say that nothing happens. There is plot and it’s exciting - but the storytelling is just so ... so calm and somehow just different than usual. Murderbot is simply not as panicky and frenzied as humans - or Murderbot doesn’t show it.

I loved the connection between Murderbot and ART and could have just listened to them for hours and would love to read more about them. Oh, wonderful!
The humans are actually the most boring part xD

Ich glaube, ich mochte diese Novelle sogar mehr, als die erste. Es war genauso ruhig wie „All Systems Red“, was nicht heißt, dass hier nichts passiert. Es gibt Plot und der ist spannend – aber die Erzählweise ist durch Murderbot einfach so ... so ruhig und irgendwie einfach anders, als üblich. Murderbot ist einfach nicht so panisch und wuselig, wie Menschen – oder Murderbot lässt es sich eben nicht anmerken.

Ich habe die Verbindung zwischen Murderbot und ART geliebt und hätte den beiden einfach stundenlang zuhören können und würde so gern mehr über sie lesen. Hach, wundervoll!
Die Menschen sind hier tatsächlich der langweiligste Part xD

So, this is my 4th download after part 1, x & 6 (included in my sub).
I've had a good time listening to it.
Story still straight forward, MB doing quite a good SS job, plot plausible though MB's cataclysmic experience - what IT's come here for to investigate and make sense of - has remained hazy and truncated.
Another sec job fairly well done, I'd say.
