Über diesen Titel

An empire in flames. A prisoner of war. An unbreakable will to escape.

At just 15, Eskara Helsene fought in the greatest war mankind has ever known - and lost. There is only one place her enemies would send a Sourcerer as powerful as her: the Pit, a prison sunk so deep into the earth the sun is a distant memory. Now, she finds herself stripped of her magic; a young girl surrounded by thieves, murderers, and worse. In order to survive she will need to make new allies, play the inmates against each other, and find a way out.

Her enemies will soon find out that Eskara is not so easily broken.

The main character in this one - Eska -is eerily similar to me. Ok, I might not be a homicidal maniac when it comes to revenge, but I also haven't been used as a weapon from a young age and then send into "the pit", a mix of prison and mine. And definitely not a happy place...

I loved Eska so very much! She's a no nonsenseain character who often is way too stubborn for her own good, and will happily take injuries and risks just as to not back down. She's a little ball of sarcasm, rage and pure willpower, and I have rarely related to a character that much! I think the world is better of with me not having magic at my hands!

This books is very character driven. We start with Eska telling her story, so we know all along that there is a life after The Pit, but that didn't take away any of the suspense of the story. I love her tone and voice and most of all her dry and dark humour!

Hayes prose as always is as fluent and easy to follow. It allowed me to get fully sucked into this new world and story within no time at all! I wasn't sitting on the couch reading, I was living, breathing and feeling the story!

The Pit was a dark and very interesting setting to explore, and even though we spent the whole book in such an enclosed space it never got boring for even one minute!

Grimdark at its finest

I can't fathom why the author thought that listening to a much more interesting person narrate her own depressing childhood would be reveting. This story is a mix between the depressing prison stories where the protagonist makes one bad choice after another without any real character growth and glimpses into a much more interesting world/story through flashbacks or tidbits from the future protagonist.

boring and depressing

This book is 95% tell and 5% Show. She is just narrating and not in a good way. Constantly telling us about things that have nothing to do with the situation at hand. Like "I was young and stupid back then. It took me becoming a queen and loosing the kingdom again bevor I understood." It hints at an interessting future but all it does is break the flow of the story without adding anything at the moment. It feels like the opening introduction/narration of a book or Film but it never stops. The normal story never beginns. We dont get to know the charakters instead she just tells us who she does (not) like. Its like the author looked at the "Show dort tell" rule and decided to do the opposit. After a few hours i could not endure it any longer and deleted this book.

Show, dont tell.

I will listen to anything Fantasy or Sci-fi related
Moira Quirk decides to narrate. As always she did a phenomenal job! She's definitely my favourite narrator right alongside Rufus Beck who is the best german narrator in my opinion and probably can't be topped except by Moira Quirk!
As for the plot itself I thought it was pretty mediocre. It kept me engaged enough while doing other stuff but I don't know if I would've picked up the physical copy. I really liked Eska but you could tell that this book was written by a man.

Moira Quirk is just the best narrator out there.
