Involuntary case study on bad epistemics
I was hoping for this book to shed light on some of the potential mysteries surrounding out of body experiences in a reasonable and balanced way. Instead though, it's a repetitive account of an author who was clearly impressed (understandably so) by his lucid dreams and trying to make a science out of it. Without much success as far as I'm concerned. If you've heard of confirmation bias, Occam's razor and similar concepts from epistemology/rationality, then you'll find countless of examples of failing to take them into account in this book.
Some noteworthy bits:
-the author claims that OOBEs are definitely not lucid dreams, but never provides any arguments for it except "you'll just know when you have one"
-to answer the question of whether people can get lost in OOBEs he claims "no", because "after thousands of recorded OOBEs there was not one case of somebody not finding back to their physical body" (I'm sure you see the irony)
-the author interprets basically anything and everything as evidence for OOBEs, including practically all religions and their prophets, memories from past lives, black holes, quantum physics, energy healing, psychic abilities - no scientific theory and no esoteric nonsense is safe from Buhlman's attempts to fit everything he finds into his grand theory of OOBEs being the most important thing ever and the only way to really experience and understand reality
-he loves to put words/opinions into scientists mouths, and makes it look as if every high profile scientist basically agrees with his views on the world - which I can assure you the vast majority of them do not
To his credit, Buhlman provides a number of predictions about what will happen in the 21st century (most of the type "science will inevitably find that ..."), which provide at least a bit of additional potential to check whether his model of the world holds up. We're only 22% through the century as I'm writing this of course. As of now, his predictions didn't do very well (he'd probably disagree). Will update this review in 78 years though.
2 stars because I still found the first half of the book interesting, and because he does provide quite a few useful tips for lucid dreaming (Clarity now!!), even if that wasn't his intention.
