Grips your attention but doesn’t deliver
I’ve read/listened to every book by John Grisham and was much looking forward to this one. As always the writing gripped me within a couple of sentences and I finished the 20-hour-audiobook in two days. So, why do I feel disappointed?
It would not matter that I have read other stories about domestic violence and preemptive killings and children in danger of being crushed by a harsh justice system. It would not matter if there was an original angle to the plot, fascinating characters, good visuals. But the book comes across as routinely written, using ingredients that have worked well else-where. There is a bit of a pretense that we know some of the protagonists from former books, but that is no reason to make do with sketches about people, who do not come alive on the page.
Strictly speaking the book does not even have an ending and I wondered if the rest of the plot is supposed to be revealed in another book.
I admit that Grisham is better than many if not most writers of the genre, even with this book that I regard as one of his weakest. But he does not deliver anything groundbreaking any more, like The Firm or Pelican Brief, or Playing for Pizza, which was really original. To me it looks like he is fulfilling his contract with his editor but his heart is not in it any more. He has enough fans, like me, who will buy every book in the hope that it will be another one of the fascinating Grishams again.
If this book will indeed have a sequel, I am not looking forward to it any more.

One of his best
from the beginning you are wondering how the story is called to turn out. the ending is not completely satisfying, but we'll...

Naja
Hab so meine Zweifel, dass Grisham das selbst geschrieben hat. Hat sich eher wie Fliessbandarbeit eines Ghostwriters angehört. Generisch, vorraussehbar, wie zusammengepuzzelt aus Versatzstücken aus seinem riesigen Fundus. Keine Überraschungen, unerwarteten Wendungen oder echte Höhepunkte.
Kein Vergleich mit ‚A time to kill‘!
Sprecher ist gut aber man muss den SüdstaatenSprech mögen. Mir ist das zu sehr Redneck!
Grisham kanns besser, viel besser!
