I have listened to no other audio book so masterfully merging the personal stories of individual people into the greater stream of historic events. There is no better tale of the Russian revolution, showing why everything happened the way it did. Thanks Mr. Figes, please write a follow-up!

Absolutely amazing book. And the narration of the audiobook is also absolutely fantastic. Provides an in depth, multifaceted view on the Russian revolution.

Orlando Figes writes about the time before and after the October coup of Lenin and the Bolschewik Party. A time and event everybody knows something about, almost everyone many things wrong.

He cites from many well selected sources. Altogether that makes a compelling reading (listening).

I can highly recommend the book.

The speaker has a clear pronunciation. His intonation I found often annoying. He wants to sound like he is conveying some new and surprising information, sometimes sentence after sentence. Even when it was new and surprising information I would have preferred a neutral way of telling me.
