Über diesen Titel
A lush, sweeping queer historical romance from the best-selling author of Boyfriend Material—perfect for fans of Bridgerton, Evie Dunmore and Lisa Kleypas!
When Viola Carroll was presumed dead at Waterloo, she took the opportunity to live, at last, as herself. But freedom does not come without a price, and Viola paid for hers with the loss of her wealth, her title and her closest companion, Justin de Vere, the Duke of Gracewood.
Only when their families reconnect, years after the war, does Viola learn how deep that loss truly was. Shattered without her, Gracewood has retreated so far into grief that Viola barely recognises her old friend in the lonely, brooding man he has become.
As Viola strives to bring Gracewood back to himself, fresh desires give new names to old feelings. Feelings that would have been impossible once and may be impossible still, but which Viola cannot deny. Even if they cost her everything, all over again.
©2022 Alexis Hall (P)2022 Hachette Audio UKthe book felt a bit like a mix of Austen and Bronte's Jane Eyre in that we do have a grumpy man focussed of his deficiencies after injury, sitting in a dark castle when the young heroine swoops in (although the heroine in this book is apparently the same age as the duke). then there are some Austenesque balls and Familien and people of questionable trustworthiness as in Northanger Abbey.
As I am Cis, I cannot comment on how well the trans person is portrayed but I did feel that the duke switches pronouns a bit too soon in his inner monologue. Presumably the habit of many years would cause a few more accidental slip-ups, even if immediately corrected and regretted. it did feel unnatural. I do get that this might have been out of consideration for readers who might have bad experiences with deadnaming .
he reader distinguished the voices very well and had distinctive characters.
Lovely Regency Era Love story
