The Sunday Times bestseller!

* * * *

Dragons are extinct. Witches are outcast. Magic is dying. But human lust for power is immortal.

Dragon fire no longer blisters the skies over Penterra, but inside the lavish palace, life is still perilous – especially for Tamsyn. Raised in the glittering court alongside the princesses, it's her duty to be punished for their misdeeds. Treated as part of the royal family but also as the lowliest servant, Tamsyn fits nowhere. So when she is tasked with the ultimate sacrifice of pretending to be one of the true royal princesses and marry Fell, the Beast of the Borderlands, son to the great dragon slayer, Tamsyn accepts her fate even if it means tricking the deadly warrior.

The wedding night begins with unexpected passion, but ends in near violence when her trickery is exposed. Rather than start a war, Fell accepts Tamsyn as his bride … but Tamsyn isn’t what she seems. She harbours dark secrets, secrets buried so deep even she doesn’t know they exist.

For Tamsyn is more than the false wife of a man who now sees her as his enemy. And when those secrets emerge, they will ignite a flame bright enough to burn the entire kingdom to the bone.

Magic is not dead … it is only sleeping. And it will take one ordinary girl with an extraordinary destiny to awaken it.

Could have used another round of editing

I felt that the first two parts were relatively strong. You got a good sense of who Tamsyn was and how she viewed her place in life and while she seemed naive, it fit her character as the princess-non-princess whipping girl.
We meet Fell and Stieg and all the characters are introduced and just as it feels like things are going to start moving..... they don't?
There were some timeline choices that seemed forced and even impossible, like an army somehow crossing a flooded river that had made the main party go a more dangerous route for #plotreasons and still arriving only a couple of days after them.
I really liked Tamsyn's mental strength when she resolved to marry despite knowing how angry he would be and it felt like she planned to make the best of it. Yet the second they started the journey to his home (Borg???), it was like that all went away and she became wishy washy. And while I think some of it can be excused as her being in a new place and new situation and tentative in her new situation, it was and remained completely contrary to her entire original determination from earlier.
And after her big reveal? It felt like all the relationships and character development fell apart there.
The spicy scenes.... did not do it for me. I can get through some cringe when it comes to spicy writing but the second I heard "My peaches grew heavy" I couldn't take anything seriously anymore.

The performances were good. I enjoyed the male voice and Tamsyn's voice actress was also mostly good. I wasn't as impressed with their choices when speaking for a character of the other gender. My greatest annoyance with the voice acting was, while 100% the writings fault, when they repeated the same word over and over. I think it would've been forgivable if it happened once or twice, but it felt like it happened whenever the author wanted to show big emotional distress? And I think maybe it could've been handled differently by the voice actors, either by changing emphasis or tone or something to not make it so repetitive as if the same sound bite was accidentally copied four times in a row.

I'm giving it a solid three because I will still read the sequel and a three is the minimum I will do that for so I guess I'm interested enough to see if things will get better. But I also won't be surprised if they don't. we'll see.

it started strong and tapered off strongly

I had a good time listening to this audiobook. Both speakers did an amazing Job. And besides, the male voice was a perfect match to what I imagined Fell. The story itself was interesting, I've never read or listened to a dragon shifter story before. Some things were strange, though. For example the description of the characters while being in their dragon form. It was hard for me to imagine what a dragon looks like hugging its knees or holding a basket in its arms. Those motions were too human for my liking. And also the writing had its weaknesses. The author lost herself in details and descriptions about feelings too often. That turned a conversation based on two sentences into a conversation of two pages. That's why the whole story felt boring sometimes because nothing happend at all despite for the characters feeling or thinking about stuff. But in a nutshell it was a nice story and I had a great time.
