The start of Cozy Crime series! Welcome to Hopgood Hall.

An unlikely duo…

When investigative journalist, Alexi Ellis, falls victim to cutbacks, she and Cosmo, her anti-social feral cat, head for beautiful Hopgood Hall, where they plan to lick their wounds in the boutique hotel run by her old friends, Cheryl and Drew Hopgood.

A missing woman…

But when she arrives Alexi discovers Cheryl and Drew both distraught. Their close friend, Natalie Parker, who recently settled in the area, has gone missing. Alexi’s sure the woman has just taken a trip somewhere, but she still has a nose for a story and agrees to look into it.

A case to solve!

So too does ex-Met Police detective turned private eye, Jack Maddox. Natalie Parker had been using his sister’s online dating agency and Jack needs to find her before his sister’s business is ruined.

Not an enjoyable listen for me. The main characters are all very two dimensional and cliché. Reads like the fanfiction of a middle-aged white mom who does not know a whole lot about investigating or actually anything. The main character is a "quirky" career-driven woman who obviously falls in love with the next random guy she meets and takes her cat everywhere. The guy is the classic hot love interest who does not provide anything to the story except connections to actually helpful people and his ex-cop attitude. Both of them are written to be supposedly "tech-savvy" because they know about emails and can "hack into the account" of the person who has gone missing. They also think sharing your love of flowers and horses on the internet and using dating sites is somehow way to naive and basically asks for potential stalkers. Trigger warning for disturbing childhood trauma btw. The missing woman turns out to have a very disturbing childhood trauma that is the main subject of the investigation after a certain point. The predator is actually questioned by our duo and the reactions to his actions are way too tame. I am not saying they condone his behavior but the topic is not handeled with the care and respect that is due for such topics. If you want to write a cliché romance story of a 2D "intelligent and independent" journalist woman who falls for the compassionate but more cynical ex-cop with a crime as their introduction to each other, don't try to include heavy subject matter such as SA. A boring read with way too many issues. I don't recommend.

Fanfiction of a middle-adged white mom
