Amory Ames is travelling to New York, excited to be a bridesmaid at her childhood friend Tabitha’s wedding, but with Prohibition in full swing, her husband, Milo, is less than enthused. When a member of the wedding party is found murdered on the front steps of the bride’s home, the happy plans take a darker twist. Amory discovers that the dead man has links to the notorious – and notoriously handsome – gangster Leon De Lora. While the police seem to think that New York’s criminal underworld is at play, Amory feels they can’t ignore the wedding guests either. Milo and Amory are drawn into the glamorous, dangerous world of nightclubs and bootleggers. But as they draw closer to unravelling the web of lies the murdered man has left in his wake, the killer is weaving a web of his own.

Not so with Ashley Weaver. Her books are gripping, the background is well researched, the amateur sleuth and her husband develop over all the 5 books I have read/listened to so far. The couple is rich and moves in the corresponding social circles, whose antics are part of the fun and interest the stories hold. The style is a self-ironic, first person account of the heroine in the tradition of the Hollywood comedies of the 30s. It is easy-going, entertaining, amusing and thus true to the genre. So far it has not become repetitive, as so many book series do. If, like me, you morn Dorothy Sayers, you might be happy to know that Ashley Weaver is young enough to go on writing for decades. I will certainly read/listen to all her future books.
