Ligia Giovannoni
"Waiting for Roxana" by Ligia Giovannoni is a powerful memoir set during Argentina's "Dirty War," capturing the story of two sisters bound by love and torn by political violence. Ligia admires her older sister, Roxana, a brilliant student who becomes a fervent activist. As Roxana joins the underground Montoneros, risking her life against the oppressive regime, Ligia watches with admiration and concern. A military raid on their family home marks the beginning of relentless danger, with Roxana forced into hiding.
When Roxana disappears, Ligia and her family are left in a harrowing search for answers. Their mother joins the Mothers of Plaza de Mayo, an activist group of women seeking their "disappeared" children. Ligia herself grapples with despair, clinging to memories of Roxana's courage and ideals as she navigates her own path toward healing.
This memoir captures both the intimate bond of sisters and the larger horrors of political oppression. Ligia's journey to honor Roxana's memory reflects a family's resilience amid unspeakable loss and a call for justice. In sharing Roxana's story, Giovannoni brings to life a powerful legacy of love, resistance, and the enduring fight against tyranny.
