Was anfängt wie ein apokalyptischer Medizin-Thriller, endet in blutig-ekligem Horror-Overkill. Die Geschichte startet so interessant, mit klasse Hauptfiguren, spannender Struktur und effektvoll eingestreuten Horrorelementen, dass das grausige Spektakel am Ende ironischerweise etwas flach daherkommt. Dass Nick Cutter tollen Horror schreiben kann, beweist er in der ersten Hälfte des Buches. In der zweiten geht es dann mit ihm durch. Weniger dick aufgetragen wäre mehr gewesen.

Wer es heftig, eklig, blutig mag, ist hier genau richtig. Wer subtilen Horror und mehr Tiefgang sucht, sollte etwas anderes lesen. Ich werde Cutter trotz meiner Kritik im Auge behalten. Da ist noch mehr drin!

Zum Sprecher:

Corey Brill hat eine recht tiefe Stimme, mit der er die unheimliche Atmosphäre der Geschichte noch verstärkt. Er passt auch gut zu Luke, dem bodenständigen Veterinär mit der gebrochenen Seele. Als das Grauen eskaliert, kann Brill gut mithalten. Seine manchmal distanziert wirkende Vortragsart unterstreicht die Unfassbarkeit der Vorgänge sogar. Abstriche muss man bei der Stimmendifferenzierung machen: Während er deutlich zwischen männlichen und weiblichen Figuren unterscheidet, hören sich die Männer selbst alle irgendwie ähnlich an. Angesichts der erstaunlichen stimmlichen Verrenkungen, die Brill am Schluss mühelos macht, hätte man da mehr von ihm erwarten können.

Eine ernstgemeinte Warnung: Nichts für zarte Gemüter, vor allem für solche mit Angst vor Insekten und einer Abneigung gegen Tierversuche!

This is my personal opinion, I’m not a literary critic.
I found the story quite boring, not scary, a bit disgusting maybe, but that’s it, 12 hours of waiting for the horrific moment that never comes. I wanted to hesr the orher book of the same author but no way jose, I’ll stick to the classic stephen king

people might expect it to be sci-fi horror because of the setup and setting, but it's not. it's psychological horror and it's effective. I was horrified, and entertained. the narrator does a great job, too.

It was a bit of a slog to get through this one. It wasn’t bad enough to give up on but also not interesting enough to recommend to others or to stick with me very long. YMMV

Never really takes off

I really liked the setting and the buildup. There's lots of body horror as expected from the author, and that is well described. But once the reason for it all is revealed, everything before it becomes utterly pointless - this might be an attempt at cosmic horror, but it just makes the story so far feel like a waste of time.
