“All magic is beautiful...and terrible. Do you not see the beauty in yours, nor the terror in mine? You can stop a heart, and I can stop your breath.”

She is heir to a Sultanate that once ruled the world. He is an unwanted prince with the power to destroy. She is order and intellect, a woman fit to rule in a man's place. He is chaos and violence and will stop at nothing to protect his people.

His magic answers hers with shadow for light. They need each other, but the cost of balance may be too high a price. Magic is dying and the only way to save it is to enlist mages who wield the forbidden power of death, mages cast out centuries ago in a brutal and bloody war.

Now, a new war is coming. Science and machines to replace magic and old religion.

They must find a way to save their people from annihilation and balance the sacred Wheel—but first, they will have to balance their own forbidden passion. His peace for her tempest, his restlessness for her calm.

Night and day, dusk and dawn, the end, and the beginning.

Good mix out of romance and action with a strong female lead, without annoying tropes. Loved it! The narrators are great and not annoying. I listened at 1.7 speed though.

Refreshing romance and action

Since this was self-published, I wasn't sure how the quality would be, but I'm truly floored by how great this story was. The wiring was poetic and moving. some might find it a little slow because it is very much a political intrigue story, but it was so perfectly paced for me. The slow-burn romance was so satisfying. I loved that the tension was external, not exactly just miscommunications (though there was lots of veiled communication due to the nature of court politics).

Naime and Makran are a love story for the ages. I'm not sure I've read such perfectly crafted characters in a long time. They felt so real. I could imagine every furtive look. I would rate the steaminess around 2 or 3 on a scale of 5. There was honestly not very much, maybe 3 or 4 scenes total, but what was there was some of the most elegant and loving writing I've ever read.

As for the audio production, I found the female narrator's use of an accent off-putting. If they don't all have the same accent, then what's the point? They're supposed to be from the same place. Otherwise, I liked that they had a male and a female voice actor to swap between perspectives. It really helped keep everything in order in my head. I'm already getting the next books in the series.

A grand love story steeped with political intrigue
