Nat Cassidy’s highly commercial, debut horror novel Mary, blends Midsommar with elements of American Psycho and a pinch of I'll Be Gone in the Dark.

Mary is a quiet, middle-aged woman doing her best to blend into the background. Unremarkable. Invisible. Unknown even to herself.

But lately, things have been changing inside Mary. Along with the hot flashes and body aches, she can’t look in a mirror without passing out, and the voices in her head have been urging her to do unspeakable things.

Fired from her job in New York, she moves back to her hometown hoping to reconnect with her past and inner self. What she finds instead are visions of terrifying, mutilated specters come with increasing regularity, she begins auto-writing strange thoughts and phrases, and her investigations reveal that these experiences are echoes of an infamous serial killer.

Then the killings begin again.

Mary’s definitely going to find herself.

A Macmillan Audio production from Tor Nightfire.

The narrator, Susan Bennett, is absolutely sensational, shining in what is probably the best female rage book written by a cis man currently out there. Kudos, Nat Cassidy!

Supremely narrated horror gem with depth

Ein großartiges Buch! Hervorragend geschrieben, vor allem wie Mary sich wandelt und mit sich kämpft. Ich konnte nicht aufhören zu hören.

Unerwartet und fesselnd

To be honest I was drawn to this book because of the cover art which really paid off because the story is amazing. It was creepy, funny, sad, intense and I couldn´t stop listening to it. I was really enjoying myself. The narrator gives the different characters their own voice and you forget that you are listening to the same narrator. Check the TW before reading/listening.

Amazing story and the narrator is incredible!

I was entirely captivated by ‘MARY’! I love to read things like ‘A certain hunger’ and such and saw this book in a ‘if you liked this movie’ read these books post about the movie ‘Pearl’, which I love. Needless to say, as an actress, I FELT every moment Mary did. No wonder Nat Cassidy writes plays as well. Masterfully written and beautifully performed in my opinion. I’d love to play her in a movie one day when I am old enough, ironically.

Brilliant!

Loved it!
Nothing is as it seems and there are plot twists within plot twist that I didn't see coming.
Moreover, Susan Bennett's voice perfectly captures Mary's character and inner thoughts.

Female rage at its best
