One mysterious mansion. Two rival journalists. Three weeks to uncover the story—and love—of a lifetime. Don’t miss this unforgettable romantic comedy performed by Phillipa Soo and John Cho!

Obituary writer Nadine Barbault doesn’t mind being called “Lady Death”. It suits the ice queen persona she’s cultivated to survive the fast-paced Toronto Herald. So when Nadine learns that famous (and reclusive) author Dot Voline has died, she doesn’t hesitate to run the obituary…only to discover that Dot is very much alive.

Nadine’s screw-up has brought Wesley Chen of the rival Spear no end of joy—she’s been a thorn in his extremely ambitious side for years. But the renewed interest in Dot also surfaced chatter about a mysterious past scandal. Intrigued, Wes goes to the source to learn more—only to discover Nadine had the exact same idea…and the infuriating woman isn’t willing to respect dibs. Typical.

At first, Dot refuses to speak to either of the squabbling pair, but then they receive an unusual request—work together, and Dot will share everything. The offer seems too good to be true…and of course, it is: in a bitter twist of irony, Dot dies for real before she can finish recounting her story. Not all is lost, however. The estate’s executor allows Wes and Nadine access to Dot’s sprawling wonderland of a mansion for three weeks to find their answer. That’s three weeks of working together…three weeks of endless sweltering in tight spaces…three weeks of learning there could be something more between them than a desire to win at any cost.

And maybe, just maybe, under the rubble of all those could-have-beens they’ll uncover more than the secret of Dot Voline’s long-ago scandal—and Lady Death will finally embrace what she’s wanted from life all along.

I couldn't stop! Needed to read it in one sitting, it was so good, so captivating! A romance and a political mystery both in one book so well intertwined, with characters so lovely and real and the story being very interesting, it made the book perfect!

Awesome!

A real gem that is not only about two people growing professionally and personally but also about the beauty and power of written words and a wonderfully excentric legacy. Beautifully narrated, too.

inspiring story and wonderful setting

A cozy, light blend of romance and mystery, this story delivers the classic enemies-to-lovers trope with a fresh, feminist twist. Instead of the tired “woman saved by a man” formula, it offers thoughtful, honest and relatable reflections on identity, family, and career choices. Subtle themes of anti-misogyny and anti-racism enrich the narrative without feeling forced. Warm, cozy, and quietly thought-provoking, it’s an enjoyable read—more soothing than thrilling, yet ending with an intriguingly satisfying reveal.

Loved it! It is a funny, mysteroius and compelling love story. I love that the story combines mystery as well als love story. And I absolutely adore the author for being able to write a story that feels light-hearted and funny while also touching on serious subjects (e.g. clingy/narcisstic mother, stalking, racism, feminism) without playing them down or make fun of them. Lily Chu is able to show that these problems exist and gives them space in her books, without making them the main plot and thus shows that these topics are not taboo anymore. I hope that in the future more romance books become like that because I think this can and make a difference for readers in their lives. Also it makes the story feel more realistic and relatable.

Loved this funny, relatable and mysterious love story!

The characters were worked out beautifully and the Story was deep on so many levels. I loved how they needed to uncover the truths, where each one lead to another deeper one. There were do many parrallels and the ending was great. But I wish to have heard their thoughts while Having intimacy. But still wonderful work.

Top Storyline, love How deep it goes
