Texas is the legal battleground for Trump’s policies, and the other side is finding out this state does not blink. Start with Christian Castro you just saw. Minnesota wanted an ICE agent dragged out of a Texas jail over a January Minneapolis shooting during the crackdown. Governor Abbott sat on the extradition. A federal judge would not force Texas to hand him over. Castro walked out of that Brownsville lockup. The case did not die there. He is now charged in Minnesota, state and federal, including counts that he lied to investigators about the shooting, and he is suspended without pay. He went north on his own. Texas never signed the warrant. That is the fight: a blue-state prosecution hunting a federal officer, and this state refusing to play courier. Austin put a name on the other side of that ledger. Wilber Garces Perez, a Venezuelan with a final removal order, was shot by ICE after prosecutors say he struck an officer with his vehicle and ran. The Justice Department charged him with assaulting a federal officer. Up to twenty years. The activist script says the agent is the criminal. The charging documents say the man behind the wheel is. In this same stretch of weeks, the Supreme Court cleared states to check voter citizenship against the federal SAVE system. Texas has already been on that tool. The dissent fretted about paperwork. The majority said the federal government can help states keep noncitizens off the rolls. Election-law changes here are aimed at the same hole: prove you belong on the list or get off it. To walk through it all with us, Houston attorney Michael J. Wynne is my guest today. Twelve years as an Assistant U.S. Attorney in the Southern District of Texas, Houston, Brownsville, and McAllen, right on the border. Harvard Law. Now he does the other side of the table: white-collar defense, extradition, government investigations, and election law. He has lived this jurisdiction from both chairs
