In Espresso Tales, Alexander McCall Smith returns home to Edinburgh and the glorious cast of his own tales of the city, the residents of 44 Scotland Street, with a new set of challenges for each one of them. Bruce, the intolerably vain and perpetually deluded ex-surveyor, is about to embark on a new career as a wine merchant, while his long-suffering flatmate Pat MacGregor, set up by matchmaking Domenica Macdonald, finds herself invited to a nudist picnic in Moray Place in the pursuit of true love.

I lived a one such building in Edinburgh as a child. These books remind me in vivid detail of what it was like and I’m thoroughly enjoying them. Witty and with well drawn, deep characters, it’s poetic and pleasing. It is also very well read.

No. 23 has a secret. In this bedsit-riddled south London wreck, lorded over by a lecherous landlord, something waits to be discovered. Yet all six residents have something to hide. Collette and Cher are on the run; Thomas is a reluctant loner; while a gorgeous Iranian asylum seeker and a 'quiet man' nobody sees try to stay hidden. And watching over them all is Vesta - or so she thinks. In the dead of night, a terrible accident pushes the neighbours into an uneasy alliance. But one of them is a killer, expertly hiding their pastime, all the while closing in on their next victim....

I thoroughly enjoyed this audiobook; it was well written with a cast of skilfully drawn characters that tells a tale set in London without allowing the setting to overshadow the action. Also, beautifully read. Highly recommended.

East Berlin, 1975: When Oberleutnant Karin Müller is called to investigate a girl's body at the foot of the wall, she realises this is a death like no other. It seems the girl was trying to escape - but from the West. The Stasi want her to discover the identity of the girl but assure Müller the case is otherwise closed. This is not a regime that tolerates a curious mind, and Müller doesn't realise that the trail she's following will lead her dangerously close to home.

Was mochten Sie an der Handlung am liebsten?

A great detective story set in a world that is not easy to navigate for authors who don't read German. However, David Young did an excellent job of presenting the GDR and I would recommend this book. I really enjoyed it.
