Random House presents the audiobook edition of The Road to Unfreedom, written and read by Timothy Snyder. The past is another country, the old saying goes. The same might be said of the future. But which country? For Europeans and Americans today, the answer is Russia.Today's Russia is an oligarchy propped up by illusions and repression. But it also represents the fulfilment of tendencies already present in the West. And if Moscow's drive to dissolve Western states and values succeeds, this could become our reality, too. In this visionary work of contemporary history, Timothy Snyder shows how Russia works within the West to destroy the West.

turns into an embarrassing political pamphlet near the end: single causality for complex economic processes, speaking of top x % of population as though they were the same people and not different people at different times, and taking property prices in San Francisco (one of the most expensive cities in the world due to its proximity to Silicon Valley) to exaggerate inequality. Still worth the time

From pretty much the beginning you know that something will go wrong. The author shows you a cliff and then slowly, methodically and thoroughly describes step by step the way to and over it. People, their wickedness displayed, their dreams and hopes dissected and then destroyed. The author definitely doesn't love the characters, they just example to show the phenomenon of human suffering and cruelty. This is *the* difference between this book and The Grapes of Wrath, where the author puts warmth in his characters.

The speaker is absolutely fantastic.

The story is dynamic, but also very poetic in its language and the speaker is absolutely wonderful.

Very boring with lots of wikipedia-style facts to make book look longer. I gave up after 30 minutes.

The Unreal and the Real is a major event not to be missed. In this two-volume selection of Ursula K. Le Guin's best short stories--as selected by the National Book Award winning author herself--the reader will be delighted, provoked, amused, and faced with the sharp, satirical voice of one of the best short story writers of the present day. Where on Earth explores Le Guin's earthbound stories which range around the world, from small town Oregon to middle Europe in the middle of revolution to summer camp.

Le Guin uses a very beautiful language, but not much happens. And if it does, you are neither provoked nor interested. Her sci-fi writings are much better.
