In the early days of April 1941, the 14,000 Australian forces garrisoned in the Libyan town of Tobruk were told to expect reinforcements and supplies within eight weeks. Eight months later these heroic, gallant, determined "Rats of Tobruk" were rescued by the British Navy having held the fort against the might of Rommel's never-before-defeated Afrika Corps.

Yet another gem by FitzSimons, well researched and put together, fairly balanced and a wonderful expression of his deep love for his countrymen and their achievements. Humphrey Bower is a star in voice and tone - never a dull moment with this narrator. A great piece of legacy and values.

The Great Boer War (1899-1902) - more properly the Great Anglo-Boer War - was one of the last romantic wars, pitting a sturdy, stubborn pioneer people fighting to establish the independence of their tiny nation against the British Empire at its peak of power and self-confidence. It was fought in the barren vastness of the South African veldt, and it produced in almost equal measure extraordinary feats of personal heroism, unbelievable examples of folly and stupidity, and many incidents of humor and tragedy.

Very detailled, yet never boring account of all the stages of the war - including well researched intros of the protagonists and their backgrounds. Smack bang to the line and always balanced in every direction. Obviously a bit heavy on the British side at times but only owed to the fact that their side had been better covered than the Boer side by Historians and News Papers. However very good on the accounts of injustices suffered by the Boers and a British Armed Forces System in a period of drastical change. Nigel Patterson´s voice adding great depth to this narrative.

It is difficult to find another soldier's story to equal Captain Darrell Watt's in terms of time spent on the field of battle and challenges faced. Even by the lofty standards of the SAS and Special Forces, one has to look far to find anyone who can match his record of resilience and valor in the face of such daunting odds and with resources so paltry. In the fight, he showed himself to be a military maestro. After 12 years in the cauldron of war, his cause slipped from beneath him, and Rhodesia gave way to Zimbabwe.

When dealing with Rhodesia the publishers should have had the brains to choose a reader who is at least the tiniest bit familiar with the english (not american!) language and knows how to pronounce "Rhodesia" or "Nkomo" or "Salisbury". On top of it Jack Chekijan speaks as if he wants to put a toddler to sleep. Not at all a voice to thrill one with a wartime story. Its an outright noucance to listen to this guy reading a story which is anything but boring.
But still - buy it. The story and the legacy behind it alone is worth enduring this voice.

From 1999 to 2009, U.S. Navy SEAL Chris Kyle recorded the most career sniper kills in United States military history. The Pentagon has officially confirmed more than 150 of Kyles kills (the previous American record was 109), but it has declined to verify the astonishing total number for this book. Iraqi insurgents feared Kyle so much they named him al-Shaitan (“the devil”) and placed a bounty on his head. Kyle earned legendary status among his fellow SEALs, Marines, and U.S. Army soldiers, whom he protected with deadly accuracy from rooftops and stealth positions.

One sided? Of course! Open and honest bare any political correctness which can be quite refreshing at times. In any case a well written, well read and good to listen to document of modern warfare and it's darker sides. Controversial indeed but nevertheless worthwhile.
