The first of this new series fell a bit flat, but this one is just really, really bad.

The story is convoluted - which might be alright.
But it is hard to follow this very, very stupid Main character through her misadventures. I kept asking myself if the author really believes that women are this stupid in general or if she actually thinks that the motif of a helpless/stupid women with some stubbornness combined with an overcompetent, calm, perfect guy is all that is needed for "romance" and that her novel might sell as such?!

Since other things seem far out of her competence here (while in other books there is humor and knowledge), she adds two other factors: brutality always dialed up to 11 (try going on for a while without rape, group rape or psychological terror from groups of mainly women) and ideas stolen from mythology without any good feeling for these or taste in arranging them.

Even the writing style is disappointing: everything is "suddenly" realized by the protagonist and always explained twice: once by what is happening and how people are reacting and then again by the protagonist, making slow sense of the world.

I hope that the last third of this would reveal that the story is actually about a woman loosing her mind instead of a woman stumbling through mythological ideas - still bad, but less idiotic.

The performance is quite good - but that really can't save the book.
I regret buying it and spending time trying to like it.

Sadly not worthy of the book

Dorothy L Sayers appreciates herself in the introduction to this book that it is not a typical crime novel. As with her other books it is a very intelligent connection between crime, recovery from trauma, description of emotional complications and a lot of humor. This time, there is also a lot (more) of romance and discussion of that.

Sadly, the performance lacks all of that. I had a very hard time listening to the story because the voice is sometimes monotone, sometimes just shrieking. Even the banter between people sounds boring and the jokes are made to sound tiring.

Personally, I will rather be reading the book again instead of listening again.

Everything you would hope for in a story by this grandmaster and a good voice actor with respect and feeling.

I enjoyed this book. It reminds me of those sci-fi or fantasy books I read when I was a teenager.
At the center there is a young woman with extraordinary abilities, who has to hide those abilities. Her special talent is something that you can easily imagine to be true. The evil guys are very believably evil and there is no ambiguity. And Jodi Taylor knows how to build a universe.

This book is not complicated or unpredictable but it's nice. It's something you listen to for fun and for the enjoyment of a day dream adventure.

Nigel Planer liest klasse!

This short story actually describes the time a few months after "The Nothinggirl" ends.

Personally I listened to this before I started on "The Nothinggirl" because I was not sure if that was my kind of story.
I fell in love with this short story and I loved the longer book after that - and then I listened to the short story again.

You can do both and will understand it in any case. Lucy Price-Lewis is a great reader or performer and I enjoyed her voice a lot.
