You think you know how the world works? Think again. From best-selling author Neal Stephenson and critically acclaimed historical and contemporary novelist Nicole Galland comes a captivating and complex near-future thriller that questions the very foundations of the modern world. Magic has faded from the minds of mankind, until an encounter between Melisande Stokes, linguistics expert at Harvard, and Tristan Lyons, shadowy agent of government, leads to the uncovering of a distant past.

To start out on a positive note, the story is very clever and keeps you wondering until the end.
It does, however, need to be abridged for audiobook listeners. Passages such as chat room transcripts and text message are tedious and boring to listen to when the narrator has to read the time, date and location of each post. Of course, this can all be skipped over when reading a physical copy of the book.

The performers were excellent, although I did not like that some characters had different voices and accents throughout the story. It definitely threw me off! One reader would have been preferred.

My takeaway: an interesting story that may be easier to read than to listen to.

This book was just what I needed... funny, since the main character's passion in life is finding the right book for the right person. This story is simple, heartwarming and has lovely descriptions of the Scottish highlands. Excellent narrator!

Marie-Laure lives with her father in Paris near the Museum of Natural History, where he works as the master of its thousands of locks. When she is six, Marie-Laure goes blind and her father builds a perfect miniature of their neighborhood so she can memorize it by touch and navigate her way home. When she is 12, the Nazis occupy Paris and father and daughter flee to the walled citadel of Saint-Malo, where Marie-Laure’s reclusive great-uncle lives in a tall house by the sea. With them they carry what might be the museum’s most valuable and dangerous jewel.

I've never encountered a book more well written. So well laid out, full of interesting bits of knowledge and even a story within a story...

The narrator was very good, although his German and French were quite difficult to understand.

I loved this book.

A thoughtful, captivating and ultimately uplifting novel from this uniquely talented author Jasmine loves two things: her sister and her work. And when her work is taken away she has no idea who she is. Matt loves two things: his family and the booze. Without them, he hits rock bottom. One New Year's Eve, two people's paths collide. Both have time on their hands; both are at a crossroads. But as the year unfolds, through moonlit nights and suburban days, an unlikely friendship slowly starts to blossom.

This story moved far too slowly and was missing that magic element of the unusual. Not my favourite book from Ahern.

Such a happy little book. Couldn't have enjoyed it more. Going to read more from Jenny Colgan in the future.
