I found this book engaging and entertaining from start to finish. I might not have understood all, or even most of the subtext but I enjoyed it all nonetheless. The performance is absolutely amazing with clearly distinguishable voices, non of which are annoying. Fantastic!

Interesting but flawed

I like the insights into North Korea and how it brings across the misery. However, the story somewhat destroys my suspension of disbelief by having the main character be a kind of Korean Forest Gump who lives several lives worth of experiences. Also, Kim Jong Il is a caricature.

Entertaining but nothing really stayed with me

Except for Murakami's great love for "freshly made" ears and standing naked in front of the mirror

A little disappointing

The narrators are great, especially Tengo and Ushikawa. I liked the story in the beginning but it slowed down extremely in the middle and the conclusion was incredibly predictable. Which is generally okay but not to an extent where I get bored for more than 10h while barely anything happens (3 months in the book). Also the characters are very inconsistent which of course also is true for real humans, but not like this. E.g. it is mentioned that Aomame looks at her reflection in the mirror for several minutes every day. 20 chapters later that changes to "she had always avoided looking in the mirror".

First I was bored then suddenly I loved it

A curious book. First I was really bored, couldn't tell the characters apart and thought this story could have been told in 10min.Then after half the book (40h!) I suddenly loved it. It doesn't really tell a story but instead paints a picture of a specific time, Russia and even humanity in general. Most of the characters do idiotic things, which first annoyed me, but is probably what makes them feel real. It's quite amazing when you get into it. I listened to the first half again after finishing, being better able to follow it and enjoying it. I'm already thinking about reading our listening to the whole thing again and would recommend it to anyone willing to put in the time.

... to be able to follow. Maybe it's not an ideal fit for an Audiobook but Benedict Cumberbatch's performance is very nice.

I enjoyed the general presentation of theories and experiments. However, in the middle part the author goes into details of specific experiments a little too much for my taste. In the last part experiments on bacteria are presented that I would have expected to be the obvious way to draw conclusions about evolution, so the previous chapters seem somewhat superfluous. Anyway the book is generally enjoyable, but the conclusion is not very surprising. "The selfish gene" impressed me far more.

Drags on a little in the end

I liked it until approximately three quarters in. Then the zenith is past and the story felt over but kept going anyway. It also got a little too obscure and self-referential for my taste. The narrators are very good and Nakata is consistently great!

I liked the earlier books in the series and the narrator is good, but there's just not that much happening and many plot threads are repeated several times.
