So, the thing is, I come from the world we were supposed to have. That means nothing to you, obviously, because you live here, in the crappy world we do have. But it never should've turned out like this. And it's all my fault - well, me and, to a lesser extent, my father. And, yeah, I guess a little bit Penelope. In both worlds she's the love of my life. But only a single version of her can exist. I have one impossible chance to fix history's greatest mistake and save this broken world.

Quite an original piece. Liked it a lot. One chapter is quite annoying though (you'll know which one I mean) and the end was slightly disappointing to me.

"Story"
There are a whole range of really interesting concepts and ideas in this this book. This makes the story quite unique and gives you plenty to think about.

"Writing Style"
In many ways this is refreshingly different. No classic story arch, barely any clichée. But the story is spread out over quite a long time and characters, so I couldn't really bond with any of them. About half the chapters are written like lab book entries (not really, but at least really detached and observing).

"Narrator"
I think I would have chosen a male speaker - partly for just personal preference, partly because most main characters (that actually have a spoken language) are male. Anyways, I think Mel Hudson does a quite good job -- the sample provided is quite indicative.

Six days ago, astronaut Mark Watney became one of the first people to walk on Mars. Now, he's sure he'll be the first person to die there. After a dust storm nearly kills him and forces his crew to evacuate while thinking him dead, Mark finds himself stranded and completely alone with no way to even signal Earth that he's alive - and even if he could get word out, his supplies would be gone long before a rescue could arrive. Chances are, though, he won't have time to starve to death. The damaged machinery, unforgiving environment, or plainold "human error" are much more likely to kill him first.

Haben Sie die Zeit genossen, in der Sie dieses Hörbuch gehört haben? Warum oder warum nicht?

Easy to listen to. Good premise. Interesting. Obviously good research into the matter.

Unfortunately I am still not very happy with the book overall.

Was hätte Andy Weir anders machen müssen, damit Sie das Hörbuch mehr genossen hätten?

Weir did a good job researching, but especially the language and attitude of the characters is not very authentic. E.g. no mechanical engineer would say stuff like "I won't bore you with the maths" when he is writing a logbook for NASA. After a few months completely alone everyone has some psychological issues. Not Rodney! Character development? Meh, just for one character a little (I think Mandy was her name).

Another thing was the overdrawn harmony on earth. In the whole story nobody is trying to take advantage of the situation, no serious disagreements, no money problems. The final words of the (audio-)book made my teeth ache. Seriously, for the kind of money they put in this mission they could have saved literally millions of people in third world countries - and your final conclusion is, that humans are always stepping in to help others, srly??? While thousands of people day everyday in holes, because they don't have enough money to buy food or medicine?

The book also uses weird clichés sometimes. A German who is intelligent enough to be sent to Mars should also be able to use an operating system in English (there is one scene where the OS is set to German because of the German astronaut on-board). And I guess a guy that is socially capable enough to be chosen as an astronaut is also able to get laid. I study physics myself - and yes there are nerds that have problems wrapping their heads around the concept of showers - but most of them are people with a more or less normal social life.

One very last thing is, that I don't think that the format of a logbook is a very good choice. It gets somewhat annoying after about four entries.

Wie hat Ihnen R. C. Bray als Sprecher gefallen? Warum?

I think he did a good job.

Wenn dieses Hörbuch ein Film wäre, würden Sie ihn sich ansehen wollen?

Since there is a movie: I plan on seeing it soon. Don't expect much though. Guess it has great pictures.

This is a really refreshing story and an awesome world to take place in. Don't expect too much action though. There is also not really a lot happening, but does it take a lot of big events to make a good story?
Though I often don't like female speakers (no sexism, just a personal preference), this one did quite a good job. Some voices could have been a little more distincted.

Trudi Canavan seems to dislike main character who actually make their own decisions. Each character is in some way only receiver of commands and trots along. This might be realistic, but it makes the characters very boring.
This book consists basically of two stories that barely interact with each other. There would have been no harm to each story by removing the other from the book.

Each year the magicians of Imardin gather together to purge the city streets of vagrants, urchins and miscreants. Masters of the disciplines of magic, they know that no one can oppose them. But their protective shield is not as impenetrable as they believe. Sonea, angry, frustrated and outraged by the treatment of her family and friends, hurls a stone at the shield, putting all her rage behind it. To the amazement of all who bear witness, the stone passes unhindered through the barrier and renders a magician unconscious.

I don't really know why people would buy abridged versions. I did - by accident. But For this story I do understand why you'd abridge: There is not much happening. Still, it seemed that it was not to artfully conducted: it seemed to me as if the abridgement did leave a few things unclear.
Trudi Canavan seems to like characters that are unable to make their own decisions. for the main character there are like two decision she makes throughout the whole book.

I'm not a fan of female narrators (I think male narrators are better at making females voices than female at males, especially old males) and Kellie Bright could not convince me otherwise.

Between each chapter (?) is a small piece of music - which I find very annoying.

Overall I would recommend to listen to one of the other, unabridged versions with a male narrator.
