John Irving returns to the themes that established him as one of our most admired and beloved authors in this absorbing novel of fate and memory. As we grow older - most of all, in what we remember and what we dream - we live in the past. Sometimes we live more vividly in the past than in the present. As an older man, Juan Diego will take a trip to the Philippines, but what travels with him are his dreams and memories; he is most alive in his childhood and early adolescence in Mexico.

After the end of the audio book, it would need at least 5 minutes of silence, but definitely not blunt advertising.

Seems to be a constructed story, like in a hollywood film. E.g.one unarmed police man, hunts a team of highly armed former soldiers. Model like woman turns up out of nowhere, ex soldier, who carries big blokes out of battle zones. Or ex special ops hitman, who starts missing when targeting the heroes of the story.

But still a gripping and gruesome story, with kind of an open end.

The speaker Paul Thornley gives a brilliant performance, with various English accents, very nice.

A counter-terror operation, codenamed Wildlife, is being mounted in Britain's most precious colony, Gibraltar. Its purpose: to capture and abduct a high-value jihadist arms-buyer. Its authors: an ambitious Foreign Office Minister, and a private defence contractor who is also his close friend. So delicate is the operation that even the Minister's Private Secretary, Toby Bell, is not cleared for it.

A gripping story with and abrupt and uncomfortable open end. Towards the end of the story I became more and more sceptical about the naivety of the acting characters, taking too less precautions, while getting more and more involved in a high level cover up.

Concerning the audio quality:
During the first halve of the audio book I had partly problems understanding the spoken words, because of too many unfiltered hissing noises. Subjectively it got better towards the end.

In The Cold Six Thousand, James Ellroy's most ambitious and explosive novel yet, he puts the whole of the 1960s under his blistering lens. The result is a work of fierce, epic fiction, a speedball through our most tumultuous time.

Hard to follow for a non-native US-American English speaker. But the story becomes more and more gripping, if you can get used to the style. Quite a surprise for a naive European, and it creates some curiosity reading a history book about this time.
Brilliant reading by Craig Wasson.

As Hitler's forces smash into Soviet territory, a lone German scout plane is forced down. Contained in a briefcase within is a seemingly inconsequential painting of a red moth. Military Intelligence dismisses the picture as insignificant, but Stalin suspects a German plot. He summons his old adversary, Inspector Pekkala - the Finn who was Tsar Nicholas II's personal detective - to discover the real significance of this strange cargo. As the storm gathers, Pekkala and his assistant from the Bureau of Special Operations find themselves on the track of the most formidable art thieves in history.

The story would have had room for some more historic depth. At some point it appears that Stalin did worry about nothing else than about the Amber Room. In the middle of the story I was guessing the culprit.
The strange use of stereotype Russian accents puzzled me. Steven Pacey is brilliant as always and saves this audio book.

IMO, The Red Moth serves well as a nice story while driving the car, not more.
