This fiction throughout so many details made me realize what history books cannot teach, ie. the reality of everyday’s life throughout French nazi, anti-jew and collaborative years and how lucky we are not to have been part of it. We all further need to remember, so we make sure it never happens again.

In the summer of 1972, Famagusta, in Cyprus, is the most desirable resort in the Mediterranean, a city bathed in the glow of good fortune. An ambitious couple open the island's most spectacular hotel, where Greek and Turkish Cypriots work in harmony. Two neighbouring families, the Georgious and the Özkans, are among many who moved to Famagusta to escape the years of unrest and ethnic violence elsewhere on the island. But beneath the city's façade of glamour and success, tension is building.

Disappointing in comparison to the others Hislop stories.
The behavior of the main character remains hardly explained.
It lacks some sort of consistency.
It still remains a decent roman though.

Besutifully written, full of sentiments and reflection while teaching a lot about the history of Greece and Thessaloniki in particular.

Partially deceiving for an author like John Irving, still overall enjoyable, No masterpiece though.
PS: The fairy tale end feels like displaced.

Thomas Nesbitt is a divorced American writer in the midst of a rueful middle age. Living a very private life in Maine - in touch only with his daughter and still trying to reconcile him to the end of a long marriage that he knew was flawed from the outset - he finds his solitude disrupted by the arrival, one wintry morning, of a box postmarked Berlin. The return address on the box - Dussmann - unsettles him completely.

Great insights into Berlin pre 89!i particularly appreciated the attention given to the side characters: the toxico homosexual roommate and his Turkish boyfriend, the Stasi and CIA agents ... Great picture of an incredible time!
