Dezember 1819 in Neuruppin geboren.

The wellsprings of desire and the impediments to love come brilliantly into focus in Evelyn Waugh's masterpiece - a novel that immerses us in the glittering and seductive world of English aristocracy in the waning days of the empire. Through the story of Charles Ryder's entanglement with the Flytes, a great Catholic family, Evelyn Waugh charts the passing of the privileged world he knew in his own youth and vividly recalls the sensuous pleasures denied him by wartime austerities.

Bilbo Baggins is a hobbit who enjoys a comfortable, unambitious life, rarely travelling further than the pantry of his hobbit-hole in Bag End. But his contentment is disturbed when the wizard, Gandalf, and a company of 13 dwarves arrive on his doorstep one day to whisk him away on an unexpected journey ‘there and back again’. They have a plot to raid the treasure hoard of Smaug the Magnificent, a large and very dangerous dragon.

Doctor Thorne is the third audiobook in Anthony Trollope's series known as the Chronicles of Barsetshire. Long regarded as one of Trollope's greatest works, it is a complex story of love, greed and illegitimacy. Set in fictional Barsetshire, it concerns the romantic challenges facing Doctor Thorne's penniless niece, Mary, and Frank Gresham, the only son of the impoverished squire of Greshambury. Mary falls in love with Frank but he is constrained by the need to marry well to restore the family fortunes.

Classic Trollope, beautifully rendered by Timothy West. A high song on Victorian values now all but forgotten. Critical of rank without heart and money without merit. Highly recommended!

...by this novel - "read" most of it on audible.de while driving (brilliantly read by Roy McMillan) & in the end I had to hurry through the last 40 pages because of the unbearable suspense. But there's more than tension - there's a trinity here: terror, tradition and tolerance are summoned supremely. The end is wholly unexpected - unguessable but not impossible.

Audie Award Winner, Audiobook of the Year, 2013. Audie Award Nominee, Best Solo Narration, 2013. Graham Greene’s evocative analysis of the love of self, the love of another, and the love of God is an English classic that has been translated for the stage, the screen, and even the opera house. Academy Award-winning actor Colin Firth (The King's Speech, A Single Man) turns in an authentic and stirring performance for this distinguished audio release.

Just finished this audio book. I was a little afraid at first if Colin Firth might not be too great a star to do it justice: my feeling was always that the voice actor should completely blend into the background...but I was wrong: Firth reads this with feeling and with the appropriate distance to his own fame. The novel: a masterpiece unlike anything writren these days - very intimate toeards its characters. A book for writers, lovers, survivors. A book for the faithless. Greene turns hate against itself: the greater the hate, the greatet the damage of the hate hating itself. What remains is more love & more soul.

Flannery O’Connor’s astonishing and haunting first novel is a classic of 20th-century literature. It is the story of Hazel Motes, a 22-year-old caught in an unending struggle against his innate, desperate faith. He falls under the spell of a “blind” street preacher named Asa Hawks and his degenerate fifteen-year-old daughter. In an ironic, malicious gesture of his own non-faith, and to prove himself a greater cynic than Hawks, Hazel founds The Church of God Without Christ but is still thwarted in his efforts to lose God.

Easily one of the best readings I have heard so far. The rendering of the many voices with their Southern twang kept me spellbound for days.
The novel itself is ... scary. Not like a Stephen King but like a Poe without ghosts. Really, this is a story of crucifixion and craziness. Christ stands in the center without making a personal appearance. Only Dostoyewsky has ever been this efficient in telling the story of original sin and redemption.

The Sun Also Rises is one of Ernest Hemingway's masterpieces and a classic example of his spare but powerful style. A poignant look at the disillusionment and angst of the post-World War I generation, the story introduces two of Hemingway's most unforgettable characters: Jake Barnes and Lady Brett Ashley. Follow the flamboyant Brett and the hapless Jake as they journey from the wild nightlife of the 1920s Paris to the brutal bullfighting rings of Spain with a motley group of expatriates.
