I knew of HP Lovecrafts Xenophobia when I started listening to this audiobook. So I was prepared for his remarks on evil "negroes" and their "degeneration" or the " refinery" of white officers. It was even amusing to hear his hatred and disgust against Portuguese or Italians, as these European people are no longer regarded with the contempt Lovecraft implies. But "The Horror at Red Hook" was more than I could take. All the poor of this district, whether black, arab, kurd or italian are depicted as devil worshipers sacrificing blue eyed blond "scandinavian" children.

I was relieved to find that TSJoshi has already pointed this out publicly. But this is so hateful I think you should do so in context with the story itself.

This being said I admire the artistic value of the audiobook. HPL's fiction is darkly fascinating, though strangely detached at the same time. His stories are mostly in retrospect, which sometimes reduces the thrill. Nonetheless there are stories that thrilled me.

I loved it though not everything is entirely logical (e.g. the nature of death in the cloud is not the same for all characters). But it is a story well told. 1 star off because there is a loose string: He sets off with a terrible picture of the U.S. in the near future. But this does not affect the main story line any further.

For a German native speaker it is a strange experience listening to English deliberately spoken with German accent - though enjoyable once you get used to it.

The story has all the good chacteristics of the Peter Grant series: slightly ironical in tone, interesting characters, changes of pace between sophisticated reflections and fast action, believable background on mundane police work interwoven with a magical world.

The big but: I did not understand the motive for the crimes comitted.

Action packed and well written

A suitable finale for a grand triology. Lots and lots of ideas and intelligent entwining plotlines as in the other volumes. Not every twist is entirely logical, but, hey, this also accounts for the Lord of the Rings or Harry Potter. Nonetheless I liked the first volume most when everything felt uncertain. The third part just has to finish the plot and does it well. It still has some surprises.

The speaker is perfect for rumbling voices and Dwarves - but he evidently dislikes Elves who become travesties.

Again S.A. Corey demonstrate, what good SF can tell about what humans and humanity are, about the limitedness of our experiences and the difficulties to pass beyond.

Tha story has everything that makes the books so good, especially a first person narrator that is believable and has a deep rooted background and consistent personality. And it is special, because for the first time a character of the "bad" side lays out his views.

eine nette kleine Peter Grant-Geschichte. Nicht mehr, aber auch nicht weniger. Etwas mehr Überraschungseffekte hätten ihr ganz gut getan.
