A compelling thriller introducing a driven young detective trying to prove herself in the LAPD. Renée Ballard works the night shift in Hollywood, beginning many investigations but finishing none as each morning she turns her cases over to day shift detectives. A once up-and-coming detective, she's been given this beat as punishment after filing a sexual harassment complaint against a supervisor.

This is a must for all Harry Bosch and Connelly fans but to my taste, it was too similar to the Harry Bosch novels. The detective is overworked, single, has had a strange childhood, was harassed, I would have liked someone different.
A good read, a lot of details, there is thrilling action and interesting secrets are uncovered. Still, some of the characters seem very bland and not very likable, not even the main protagonist. May be I am so tuned into Harry that to like Renee it takes more time.

Why would a mathematics professor from Cambridge University, renting a holiday home outside Cape Town, require a false identity and three bodyguards? And where is he, now that they are dead? The only clue to the bodyguards' murder is the snake engraved on the shell casings of the bullets that killed them. Investigating the massacre, Benny Griessel and his team find themselves being drawn into an international conspiracy with shocking implications.

Was hat Ihnen am allerbesten an Cobra gefallen?

The speaker and the plot are interwoven. Without this speaker this book wouldn't be as good. He can imitate all kind of voices without sounding silly. I like Benny as a figure. He has problems that are sometimes very amusing sometimes very touching. The pick-pocket is portrayed in a very authentic seeming way.It is a book that grabs you.

Würden Sie dieses Buch einem Freund empfehlen? Warum oder warum nicht?

This book is only for people that are really into computers and like playing games with reality. The speaker was unfortunately instructed to speak with a (at least to me) very penetrating voice that grated on my nerves. The beginning is great but after a while the plot becomes very repetitive.

This was the wrong book for me but it might be great for teenagers as it offers a lot of phantastic inventions like cloned dodos as pets, a father whose face could literally stop clocks and a heroine that hunts books.

At the height of World War II, the famous writer Ernest Hemingway sought permission from the U.S. government to operate a spy ring out of his house in the Cuban countryside. This much is true... It is the summer of ’42 and FBI agent Joe Lucas has come to Cuba at the behest of J. Edgar Hoover to keep an eye on Hemingway. The great writer has assembled a ragtag spy ring that he calls the “Crook Factory” to play a dangerous game of amateur espionage.
