The twists in this book are unlike those in previous books not thought trough, and are obviously retconned in. The book is still exciting and interesting, but the elegance of the planned-out story in previous books is unfortunately lost and replaced with random stuff the author comes up with, and which contradicts previous events.

A litRPG in a post apocalyptic space fantasy setting about a group of arch-necromancers competing to become a lich-like.
Mixed with Gothic horror, murder mystery,
and YA lesbian paranormal romance.

Told from the perspective of the slightly dim sidekick fighter who just wants to hit things with her sword.

And it is all glorious even if some of those elements aren't your cup of tea on their own.

Only downside is that the huge gallary of characters are slightly hard to keep track of in an audiobook format, and reading the character overview in the beginning of the book aloud isn't helpful and is a terrible start for an audiobook, hence -1 on total score.

This series gets worse and worse for every book. I should have known to stop after book 2.

I was a bit worried in beginning of the book as the story setup is some objectivist fever dream, but the story quickly moves on with romance and fairies. If the story has any hidden morals, it is that marriages are the root of all evil.

Nonsensical, low on story, low on character, low on world building. Just all pointless unstructured action

This story isn't self contained. It ends in revalations that does matter to this book, and just seems to setup things for later books.

As is this is at best an act 1 of a larger story, but not a very good act 1. Could easily become more satisfactory based on the sequels. I am just not particularly sold on reading them based solely on this book.

A well-written and engaging wish fullfillment fantasy. Hard to pause once engaged with. The only issues I have with it, is that it might be a little too blatently wish-fullfilling, to the point where it gets rather silly:
"The girlfriend: Tell me again, how you nailing your ex-girlfriend will save all of us!"

The book tries passably to enbue the main-character with convincing enough humility and enough obstacles to overcome that it never get annoying or boring.

Unique but obnoxious narrative style

The whole story is not just told in 3rd person, but in a very indirect 3rd person. The result almost sounds poetic at times. The problem however is that it completely robs the main characters of any agency, stuff just happens to them//hem, and on the rare occation he does something active, it is just as unexplained and comes of as deus ex machina.

The world is pretty interesting though, and the indirect story telling helps reveal it only very very slowly. It is unfortunately ruined by the world is also being very logic soft, you can't really reason about how things are depending on what you are told, because the writer is not very strict with hard world-building or hard logic, it is all very wishy-washy, so you have to wait until the writer reveals what he thinks need explaining.

I hadn't noticed it was a YA book before picking it up, and got a bit worried when it became apparent early in the book. Fortunately I had nothing to worry about. Whlle it is coming of age story with a number of clichés it is extremely well-writtent and very engaging. Worst thing about is that it is so good it is hard to stop once you have started listening to it. Make sure you have the time before starting :D
