Six million years ago, at the very dawn of the starfaring era, Abigail Gentian fractured herself into a thousand male and female clones: the shatterlings. Sent out into the galaxy, these shatterlings have stood aloof as they document the rise and fall of countless human empires. They meet every 200,000 years to exchange news and memories of their travels with their siblings.

a great idea behind the story about information and memories as the most valuable thing in the interstellar community.

the only thing a little confusing at times when listening is the story is told by two people in the I-perspective and these two are a couple more ore less always together. I can imagine that I'm the paper book it is easier to distinguish.

After the disastrous attack on the Manticoran home system by forces unknown, the Royal Manticoran Navy stands on the brink of collapse. A shadowy enemy with the resources to hurl warships across hundreds of light years seeks to conquer the Star Kingdom for reasons unknown, while forces from within Manticore's own government seek to discredit and weaken the Navy for reasons very much known: their own political gain.

Travis Long is going on a hunt for the enemy in the battle of manticor.

this book continues after the battle of manticor. it is exciting to read about how the non experienced star systems Navi is trying to find out about the reason behind the attack.

at the end it is still not clear to manticor that all the trouble is caused by the existence of a wormhole junction.
I am looking forward to a fourth book to finish this series.

Lieutenant Travis Long of the Royal Manticoran Navy is the sort of person who likes an orderly universe. One where people follow the rules. Unfortunately he lives in the real universe. The good news is that Travis is one of those rare people who may like rules but has a talent for thinking outside them when everything starts coming apart. That talent has stood him - and the Star Kingdom - in good stead in the past, and it's one reason he's now a "mustang" - an ex-enlisted man who's been given a commission.

different to the first book of this series this book more loosely follows Travis Long, at least the first half. instead it does more on other characters of the first book. about half way through it switched to the story of the battle of manticor where again Travis plays a major part. for people who already read the other series of the Honorverse, this second half starts repetitiously since a version of this battle it already there. don't worry, this story is stretched much longer until the end of the battle whereas it is much shorter at the other series (of short stories).

Growing up, Travis Uriah Long yearned for order and discipline in his life...he two things his neglectful mother couldn’t or wouldn’t provide. So when Travis enlisted in the Royal Manticoran Navy, he thought he’d finally found the structure he’d always wanted so desperately. But life in the RMN isn’t exactly what he expected. Boot camp is rough and frustrating; his first ship assignment lax and disorderly; and with the Star Kingdom of Manticore still recovering from a devastating plague, the Navy is possibly on the edge of budgetary extinction.

We are following the story of Travis Long in the early days of manticor after the plague. Travis signed up for the Navi in the non-officer ranks. His trade is that he always sticks to the rules and therefore encounters difficulties in a degraded Navi. Despite his by the book attitude he amazingly has the ability to think out of the box. This brings him to participate in the more rare opportunities of special assignments in the Navi these days.

I really enjoyed this book. It does not have the strong action driven plot of the Honor Harrington books but gives an interesting view on the old space ship and traveling era. Of cause there is also action but it is actually not really necessary to enjoy this story. Different to the books of the other side series of the Honorverse this book is a complete consistent story that makes me want to continue this series.

The hottest military science fiction series of all time continues. The mission: to boldly explore David Weber's Honorverse; to deliver all the action, courage, derring do, and pulse pounding excitement of space naval adventure with tales set in a world touched by the greatness of one epic heroine: Honor Harrington.

I have listened now to the complete Honerverse and have to say that this is the first book I am disappointed about. The first two stories are timetabled in an very early time of the expansion of the solar system but I had to guess about the time frame until almost the end of the stories. specially the first story has an ending that would have better fit in one of the nice "history told" type of stories instead of trying to invent a story around what was to be explained. but mainly I was missing a better setup in the beginning to get into the time frame.
The third story about how Honors mother and father met is entertaining even though there are annoying bits and pieces.
The fourth about Honor getting adopted is short and to the point. It could have fit in one other the main story lines as a flashback or something, but I guess it was edited out due to the already extensive size of the books.
The last story, again, is not formally introduce of when it happened, and so much of the otherwise possible getting into the feeling of the universe is lost. it is told from the perspective of a Grayson mitshipmen woman. This is confusing in the beginning turns into annoying until halfway through it gets neutral.

In total I would suggest to skip this book until you have nothing else to listen to in this universe and still can not stop. It definitely not worth much.
Interestingly, I didn't find his book in the bibliography on Weber's homepage - I wonder why.

The first story of three is about Honor Harringtons first encounter of the tree cats, her tree cat, as an eleven year old child.
The third is about the throw-down of the uprising of the people of Haven against Oscar St-Just.
The last and fourth part of the book is less a story than an comprehensive background information about the technology of light speed travel, the expansion of people to other solar systems, politics and so on. Specially the first and the last are really worth it.

Sometimes things don't work out exactly as planned. The Mesan Alignment has a plan - one it's been working on for centuries. A plan to remake the galaxy and genetically improve the human race - its way. Until recently things have gone pretty much as scheduled, but then the Alignment hit a minor bump in the road called the Star Empire of Manticore. So the Alignment engineered a war between the Solarian League, the biggest and most formidable interstellar power in human history.

After enjoying the last book I was looking forward to how the story would evolve in this book. Sadly, I had to encounter that the timeline of this book starts about three books in the past. It deals with the story of the Talbert cluster and the work of Firebrand to undermine he credibility of the Manties. During the course of the book there are several time jumps which come without any explanation.
After 3/4 of the book, we arrive relatively close to the current events of last book, ending about 5 hours after the last. I do not want to spoil too much for people who have not listened that far, that's why I choose these vague and strange wordings.

In total the only annoying thing is the continues usage of Czech terms when the book continues a story of Czech origin. After the use of a Czech word, it is always translated. This probably is good, but I gave me a bad feeling. Why not use the English word in the first place.
this book is no a waist but I can not understand why I was not written right after the Talbert clusters book and the rest of the side stories that explain more about the events that lead to the finally were split. It felt to me that only about the last third of the book was really fitting the point we were left of at the last book.

I would recommend to listen to this book right after the book at the Talbert cluster and stop it about 2/3 in, than continue with the other books and come back to it after the last.
